A mate is looking at an 88 safari.
TD42 non turbo manual.
Anything to look out for?
How difficult is it to find the factory parts to turbo these and what internal engine differences are there between these and later turbo engines?

Take a look here it has a good list of things to watch out for on gq's.
Factory Turbo kits pop up occasionally but are usually snapped up pretty quick.

what he said^^^
also keep an eye out for rust in the seams in the rear wheel arch, where the wheel guard is joined on to the inside tray area.
have a good look underneath the whole truck for rust.

You won't find a factory turbo for it, they're like rocking-horse turds. Use any decent aftermarket turbo, fit an aneroid to the pump and it will go better than a factory one.
The pre August 1993 non-turbo engines are better than the later non-turbo ones, so its a good start and ideal to turbo. Differences from turboed engines are pistons, oil squirters for piston cooling, cam etc.
