Disk Brakes / Handbrake

Is there anyone in the Chch area that could give me a hand to adjust my handbrake and rear brakes over the weekend please?

The handbrake is not working and I suspect the rear brakes are not too flash either.

This is on a 95 Terrano.

PS. I have in the past adjusted the cog wheel thimagyjig but I wonder if there is more that needs looking at.

The discs will be self adjusting. May just need new pads. Take wheel off, remove 2 bolts form caliper, push piston back with G clamp and suitable size socket, replace pads and put it back together. (front is the same process)

I hand brake issues with my old terrano. turned out one side of the cable was stiff and not releasing hence heating and wearing the shoe every time I adjusted it. Figured it out when I couldn't get enough slack to refit new shoes. A bit of CRC down the cable while working it and it was all mint. This also turned out to be the caused of the melted axle seal and knackered bearing. Neither liked the heat running around with the hand brake on created.

EDIT: sorry above re discs is assuming the 95 still had discs all round. I know the newer shape (96+) went back to drum rear.

Cheers for the reply, yes it is disks all round on mine.

I would prefer someone with the tools to help out as mine are all in storage. I doubt its the pads either, more likely the auto adjuster thingy is clogged up with dirt etc.

Terrano's have a internal drum hand brake which is cast into the factory disk brake, you will see what i mean when ya pull it apart it hard to explain. will try to find a pic

How did you go? Info if you haven't done it yet........... Take off the wheels, release handbrake and with some gentle tapping (BFHish) the disc and handbrake drum (one peice) will come off. There usually is some foreign matter hiding in there so clean this out, check level of shoes. If all good put back together. On my terrano the major problem with the handbrake is the cable. It is knackered!!!! After this If you tighten up the cog adjuster and the wheel will not rotate then there should be no problem with the brakes. Loosen off the adjuster slightly then pull the handbrake lever. If it is still average then it could point towardsa the cable

The above stuff above pretty much covers the hand brake.

There is no adjuster on the disc caliper. They do have a slide system to balance the pressure to both sides of the disc. youll see 2 rubber sleeves. This all comes apart pretty easy.

To push the piston back use a big socket in the piston and a g clamp onto the caliper/socket (can do this with bleed valve closed and brake line still attached.) If it wont go back easy/smoothly the piston is stuck. Pull the caliper right off (meaning disconnect brake line) pull piston (may need to use compressed air into brake line hole, but be careful cause it will let go like a big bullet.) Clean up piston and put new seal kit in and should be all sweet. A stuck piston will also cause poor braking as the piston may not push out.


The nissan caliper doesn't have the adjuster screw like the Bighorn etc.

Took the wheel off, had a wee look and gave up. Will take it in somewhere during the week and get the experts to look at it.
