LJ71 wheel swap. What do other owners do?

Post by Highway »

Ok so I have a '91 LJ71 with standard 16" x 6" alloys. I'm running 245/75x16's at the moment.

I'm wanting to go to a wider, more common, mud tyre, say a 31/10.5x15.

Problem I'm finding is none of the "will fit most 4x4's" rims fit. When I say fit I mean they hit the brake caliper before they're even bolt all the way on.

Being adverse at spending more money that I have too, actually any money, I thought I'd go for second hand rims, so I've tried Nissan, Mitsi rims and both fail to clear the brake calipers.

I'm wondering what other LJ71 owners do for wider, say 7", 8" rims?

Cheers.

I'm pretty sure Jerry just stuck standard aftermarket 15x8 rims straight onto his Cruiser Jnr without any problems with the calipers?

I was wondering if a set of aftermarket steelies (e.g. desert rats) would fit. Hoping someone can confirm this and perhaps even provide me with the best offset... 0, -18, -28 or -44

Cheers.

I bought new rims and then moved the centres, cheapest way would be to buy second hand rims, then get the centres moved... doesn't matter about offset, just correct size and stud pattern. btw had to take the grinder to the calipers before the unmodified rims would fit

You could pm Jerry but I think his knowledge is limited to the wheels are the round thingies that go under the truck

Skid's a guru on tyres and rims and stuff and he works in the tyre industry, maybe give him a try

umm yeah those wheel thingys are those round thingys that are under the truck

I'll see what the rim sizes are on my POS truck , they came with the truck when I got it ... along with most of the factory dents ....then a certain ORE member accidently backed into my perfect drivers door   with his nissan

as far as I know they just fitted, I can find out from Rob if you want, otherwise SKID might know......I have 33's on mine but that is with a 2" OME kit which has a 50mm lift? can fit 35's but it will screw up the gearing, find its really good in 2nd Low and you have 1st Low in reserve when you need it. can you borrow a set and see what what they are like? the high pinion diffs on 33's give you more clearance than a normal 70 series with the 9" diffs on 35's

15 x 8" white spokes in the negative 20s offset will do the trick

there are 3-4 different manufacturers that range from -22 up to -28

go the biggest offset, coz it will keep them further away from calipers

just find out what jerry etc put on their trucks and make sure they don't stick out the guards if you wanna get a wof with them

It's not directly the offset that will give you caliper clearance it's the wheel centre/hub design that will determine how far away the spokes are from the caliper.

A larger hub centre will usually also mean a larger offset but not necessarily the other way around.

I tried to use a mates safari rim on my lod cruiser and it scraped the caliper ..So it had to go on the back..The safari wheel and the cruiser wheel are different in that from the studs the cruiser one is on a bigger angle to clear the calipers..is that as clear as mud..so did you try a cruiser wheel or nissan..My 2 bobs worth..Maybee try a tyre shop with bit of a selection of fitments and try em on.

easiest and cheapest

go and buy some ln 130 standard 15" steel rims from a wrecker.

or just buy a set of 265 / 75 / 16 MT of your choice and keep your standard rims

Just to clarify, have tried Nissan rims off a 91 safari and mitsi rims off a 97 prado, both don't clear the LJ's calipers.

Want to go 15" so I ahve more choice of tyre as 16" give's me a very limited choice of tyre unless I go 33" or 35" which I don't want to on the LJ.

While a set of 8" wide rims would be nice, it sounds like a good bet is to try for a set of surf rims from a wrecker.

spare is a hankook RT01 33 x 12.5 x 15. rim is a ROH Trak 2 (8jjx15 with 0 68 next to it)

4 mudzilla's are on rims with no markings on the front but have a red and green band on the front, size is 33 x 13.5 x 15, will pull the tyres off this week to clean out the brakes etc maybe there is some codes on the back???

the tyre nerds will know what the above means

Can pull off and measure them if you want?

nissan and mitsi are the same you need to try a landcruiser offset as they are dramatically different fron the center of the wheel..try the surf ones they will fit and go and get some 15x8 new or there are plenty of them on trade me.. I have one here i can take some measurements for you if you like

Aim for this week is a trip to Tony's (or similar) to price a set of ROH - Trak 2s, which appear to be identical to the Speedy - Desert Rats. Then should I be horrified at their price, a trip to the wreckers for a set of surf rims will do the trick.

Thanks all for your assistance, I'm confdient I now kinda sorta know what I'm looking for :? :D

That would be most helpful, then I could work out the offset. I assume your wheels don't stick out of the guards?

can you try them on at the wreckers?

I would expect I'd be able to try them on, wouldn't buy them if there wasn't some guarantee that they fit, or I could at least bring them back if they didn't.

they do slightly but then WOF guy has only commented on it once and not said anything else, but thats a good thing as it protects your body on some occasions as they are hitting the bank instead of the body

will measure the wheels in a few mins
