Hi , I have perused these forums for wee while now but never posted because I could find the answer without doing that.
Now, I dont feel like spending ages looking so thought it might be a good idea to just register and ask a question instead.
Ok.. all taht waffle out of the way.
Ive got a Nissan Terrano 1995, I dont think its the widebody one, but its got the wide body dashboard and disk brakes all round so Im guessing its either been crashed and repaired (dont think so) or some kind of upgrade model from most of the ones i have seen of similar shape and year etc.
Its a bit of a scruffy ol thing but it goes well so and it suits my mix of general day to day transport and medium level weekend/ holiday bush bashing, and to top it off its not too bad on the juice/comfortable/practical. I do wish it had the exterior spare wheel holder, as the interior mounting takes up space and is a bit silly. Also its completely devoid of any kind of bars other than a kind of side impact kind of bar below the step thing that runs along the sides beneath the doors, pretending to be usefull..
Anyway.. My question, if youve read this far is about how to unscrew and rescrew the ignition/steering lock assembly back onto the steering column. You see, some little pile of faeces stole my wagon from work the other day. Luckily they did no damage other than the rear quarterlight glass( NZ$25 off trademe) and the ignition assembly (60 bucks from wrecker) then dumped it after writing all over the interior with a permant ink felt pen. Lucky for me they dumped it nearly outside my house but I was left with the problem of making it secure and fixing the ignition so i dont have to use a screwdriver to start it. (or giving anyone else the opportunity to either)
THe ignition assembly has bolts with no groove bits in the head for any screwdrivers to fit into.. its like they are just blank bolts..
How the hell, apart from cutting them) do i get them off and then put the replacement ones back in nice and tight again?
Just to be clear, I am talking about the bolts that hold together the two halves of the cast aluminium ignition assembly around the steering column... How the hell do i get these buggers off then back on tightly?
any help would be appreciated.. thanks
Glenn.
Yep, another newbie, with questions.
Re: Yep, another newbie, with questions.
i think you may have to cut them
the bolts probably had shear heads on them i.e. you do them up till the head breaks off that way noone can take it off easily

Re: Yep, another newbie, with questions.
not sure if this is the correct way to do it or not but when i did it last we used a fine chisel to tap a nice flat head screw driver grove into it and then un did them as normal, after you have replaced them just get a center punch and smack them down again to make them secure, i understand this is the way many garages do it. hope thats helpful,
might get rid of this post after a day or two so please don't quote me i would rather not give theives any helpful information.

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!

Please don't quote me for the same reason
If it is only the lock where the key goes that has been wreaked you can prise the cap off and remove the lock barrel and drop in the replacement without having to remove the whole unit and those annoying screws.
An easy way to get the barrel out is screw the screw of a slide hammer into the ond lock and a couple of taps and it it's out
If you do have to .. Rangi's trick does work. and its easier than trying to cut them unless you have access to a grinder as they are often hardened
Please post when you have done so Rangi and I can clear these ...

There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.
Re: Yep, another newbie, with questions.
Thanks guys, Ill give that a go tomorrow hopefully. Dazza, its the whole barrel that was knackered so i had to buy another whole assembly. looks like they either bashed it or cranked it with stilsons or something like that to make the steering lock seperate from the steering column so the remains of the casting is still on there, and this is the bit still hanging on that i need to remove to make way for the replacement assembly that I've purchased.
Oh and Moriaty.. sorry not to introduce myself properly.. Im based in Christchurch.. Ill amend my details when i get the chance. Im interested in going for a few trips if anyone around here is up for it. My car is pretty much bog standard so at the moment I cant really do any hard core stuff, plus I dont want to destroy it completely because its my daily transport too.Saying that, I dont molly coddle it either. I recently had an arse clenching moment on two wheels to prove it.
Whats suggested for some basic mods to get out on some of the trips? I only have standard nissan terrano ground clearance and whatever bash plates etc they come with as standard. There is quite a meaty looking hook on the front of it but whether that is touch enough to qualify I dont know. I dont have a snorkel, which i wouldnt mind and I have heard its good to have a breather for the diff so the water doesnt get sucked in if you cross a river etc.. Can anyone suggest the cheapest way to get a satisfactory snorkel and breather set up? I dont really want to spend loads, but also dont want to not spend enough, and knacker it becuase i didnt have a breather or bash plate etc.
What do you guys suggest for a beginners set of mods for this thing.. .. remember i dont want to spend loads..
It's a 2.7turbo 95 terrano skinny body ..
thanks for you help.

Best thing for mods is to just go out on a few trips with the local guys down there and have a look at their trucks and you'll soon get an idea from there what you might like to or not to do to your truck

Good luck with the ignition repairs

Re: Yep, another newbie, with questions.
First and foremost; get a snorkle fitted.
Id reccomend going to Autobend here in Chch and getting a decent steel tubular one made and fitted. This is one of my regrets not doing this as they give a far better airflow than the moulded plastic ones.
Second is to replace the factory tow hook in the front. Get some rated tow hooks fitted front and rear.
Rated tow hooks are a must as the factory ones have no rating and are designed for flat land towing only.
I and many others would not recover a vehicle with factory hooks on it, for our own safety first and foremost.
The rest of the recovery gear, modifications and extra addons can come as time and money allows.
You will soon see what others have done when you get out and amongst us on trips etc.
Dont hesitate to ask questions, someone will have an answer for you.
PS, I have not seen a '95 non wide body before. You sure on the year? I could stand corrected tho......

Thanks kiwipete, What kind of dollars are we talking for the autobend snorkels? I have no idea. I like the idea of good breathing but somehow PLastic strikes me a bit better if you get a knock in it.. easier to just pop out or fix on the go with a bit of an old icecream container and some epoxy

My wagon is def a 95 non widebody on paper, whether its because of import issues/registration dates i dont know. Its got the sort of roundish dash like the widebody, but no wheel arch flares or chrome like the widebody, Also looks to have sort of more modern looking trim to most skinny body ones.. sort of blue patterned stuff compared to the mono tone of other terranos ive seen of the same vintage. Also has 4 wheel disk brakes.. The wrecker who i got the ignition off said he didnt think they all came with that as standard.. I think its a bit of an oddball really.. Most have the spare tyre mounted on that frame on the back too.. mines inside

P.s.. how much is a hook and what kind of rating should i get for a terrano?
Thanks,
Aotror

Sorry but I really do not know how much they are, but I suspect they are going to be way cheaper than the plastic ones. They have done many Terranos so will have the measurements all ready to put in the machine.

Probably not so relavent for what i do but you never know.. They look fairly vunerable where they sit eh.
I have yet to hear of one breaking or suffering damage, I will however stand corrected.
Do you think i need a Diff breather pipe or is that just codswallop? if so what should i use?
Yes definatley, I might even have some hose that fits in your situation if you talk nicely to me.

The front breather, along with the fuel etc, is connected to the small metal hose on the centre of the firewall, shaped like a walking stick handle, ie. has a u bend on the end of it.

Mine is the same as yours except for the flares, but they are comming off in due course. You may very well be able to fit a rear tyre hanger to yours too, we should get together sometime and you can compare notes etc.
Mine has discs all round too.
Generaly the chrome denoted LSD Sprots models, just a little more bling.

Shop around the different accessory stores and 4x4 shops in town, generaly they are 10,000lb rated.

Re: Yep, another newbie, with questions.
My buddy just got one of those autobend snorkels and i think it was a whisker over $100ish..4wd bits was the cheapest for the tow hooks i found..

Yes definatley, I might even have some hose that fits in your situation if you talk nicely to me.The rear one is the one to be aware of, it only 6" long and goes into the cross member above the dif. I placed mine right up through the floor and into the side wall of the boot. If it gets water up that high I think im in for some major damage me thinks, so a breather that high with water in it is of little consequence.

Thanks guys.. all problems solved except the right bit of plastic for under the steering column. I got a bit from the wrecker, but found out its for the older model terrano and doesnt quite fit exactly.. Might see if he'll swap it or take it back.. Ended up hacksawing the steering lock off then replacing it by cutting a screwdriver groove in the nut and screwing it back in. No ideal but at least it all works as it should now..
Kiwipete. Im keen to swap notes.. maybe get a few ideas about bits and pieces and whatnot..
