I want to import a Warn 8274 winch motor..where???

Post by hosehustler »

I have a very good warn 8274 winch, the motor is the old 2.5hp standard job, i've been reading and the 25th anniversery motor is 4.6hp series wound( nearly 2x the grunt) it can be fitted to my hi-mount winch, I have scrolled the net search engines and just can't seem to get the right link.
Has anyone repowered a 8274....if so....where did you get the motor and what did it cost.
cheers in advance

I just got one from Warren at 4WD bits when I did mine.

If you've got an old 8274 and not a 8274-50 and have the origional 2.5hp prestolite motor it'll have a keywayed shaft and not a splined shaft so you'll have to replace the pinion gear in the winch from a keyway to a splined gear.

The gear is about 50 bucks and when I spoke to the warn agents (fully equipped) they said there were about 60 of them in a warehouse somewhere in Hamilton

I've got the warn part number for the gear somewhere if I can find the email

Edit*

I wouldnt expect the 4.6hp to go much faster, the only difference I really noticed was the motor dosent heat up as fast as the old 2.5hp did, in fact it runs a lot longer and cooler than the 2.5 did, you might have to look at those dual motor adaptors of wazza's or something like that if you want a noticable gain in grunt but it starts making them a pretty expensive winch.

I found the bolts that came with my motor were a little bit short, there was only about 4mm bite into the thread in the winch housing so I brought a length of threaded rod and cut that down to length and put some nyloc nuts on the end

The 4.6 is a fair bit faster than the old 2.5hp motor. One annoynce I find with the 4.6 motor is that is overruns for longer as it has two ball bearings instead of a bearing and a bush.

Anyway, you don't want to buy a 4.6hp motor, you want to buy the 6hp motor off the Warn XP winch. Warn pn#68608

Yes, it bolts straight on. As mentioned you'll need the splined gear too if you have the old 2.5hp with keyway gear.
