dwayne... that rings a bell. he txted me the other night asking what ratio i wanted he aint got none:(,

i know ifs has a 4.88 nzhunter had one, Im prity sure taz01 does to but hes using it!.

I need 4.88's to turn my 33's, but if i can't find 4.88's it will have to be 4.5's and maby a little bit of a repower or somthing:(.

Hes talking about a ifs front end(i think) Which is diffrent to solid so no use to you

SWB prados like my LJ71 use the 4.88 diffs, the odd surf like Gazza's one uses them too

Im after a solid axle chassie and a 85 to 89 old fiberglass back surf body

for those of you that dont know I was in the shed welding a falcon bracket onto my rig and the whole thing cought on fire. as it turned out it destoryed my shed and my crawler but the crawler was not insured so have to rebuild.

to add insult to injury the insurance company is going to screw me over with my tools and motor parts so I will be out of pocket by about 30 grand

but the stupid thing was the fireman did not put the fire out and it took out half the house as well

so im after a new body and chassie in the canterbury , it dose not need any running gear or motor in it , will take a ifs body as they are the same may also consider a 4 door body if its the right price

ok ive found a 4.88 diff head for $300 out of a 93 surf, will this fit into a 86 surf?

It will need to be full front IFS diff setup and not just a diff head to go in the front of a Surf.
Does it have ADD? Do you have a non-ADD diff to convert the ADD diff with??

What ratio do you have in your surf at the moment? I only have to to go from 4.1 to 4.3 ring and pinion to return to stock gearing (going from factory 31's to 33's). When I want to go lower I will get 4.5's or change transfer case gears.

I went through the process of looking for 4.88 IFS diffs a few months ago, and have decided not to go down that path. As IFS fronts in that ratio are very hard to come by, and I have all ready blown two 4.1 front IFS diffs.

at the moment i have 4.3 diffs.

i have no idea if it's add or not, i don't know if mine is add eiver....
Mines a 86 and his is a 93, so i have no idea?

Top is a Non-ADD IFS diff
Bottom is the ADD passenger side axle shaft, with vacuum operated disconnect.

Both are interchangeable. (I'm assuming the 93 diff is ADD)If you have a Non-ADD setup on your truck you will need to put your passenger side axle shaft on the newer ADD diff.

I have no idea what size tyres mine came from the factory, but it came with the 31x10.5's its got now wen i got it.

hey my mate runs 35s with 4.3s and it is goes mint, i wouldnt bother changn them ae personally,

An 86 surf won't have an ADD diff.
I used to run 33s on my 86 IFS surf with 4.3 ratio diffs, no slower than it was on 31s.
It was still slow, once it was in low box it was fine.

when you change to a 4.88 they become weaker, the lower the ratio the weaker the diff gets, so be careful about that
