I threw a 7mge in my Surf, 200hp, same fuel economy as the 3y, goes really well, have a read of my build here

cost me about 2500 inc engine, best "bang for your buck" conversion for a Hilux/Surf, and looks factory when done
give me a call if ya have any questions

if you're are going to do the repower your self then the world is your oyster, but for reliability and great fuel economy and lots more power, you can't go past the commodore V6.

if you have to pay someone to do it, then you had better start saving some more moolah

that was quick decision, you said you wouldnt mind a V8, well if you can do mild fabrication then is really cheap to do a 1UZ-fe, motor with stock ecu and full loom is about 2g, bell housing and clutch is about 500 i think, then you add the cost of exhauste, motor mounts etc (all you'd have to worry about no matter wat). there are alot of people who are great help with these motors and they are awesome, (i have one), lots of power and sound awesome. if you want ive got a few people who will give you prices and the right gear as youve got to check the motor before purchasing, if its been dropped on its pan its stuffed as in bends oil pick up and making sure all ya coils are ok, but any motor needs to be checked before buying as saying goes buyer beware. check out; http://geocities.com/deonsv8hilux/ he's done one for under 4g. also check out the lextreme website, its got all the info you'd ever need about the motor and some very tempting power gain options, a guy here in tpo will supercharge mine with an m90 SC for $2500 which really good, there is a team in the NZDRA running a twin turbo 1UZfe with standard internals just mild head work and he pushed over 27psi of boost. they are in insanly awesome moter and fit really well in the hilux's.... just another perspective for ya.

the guys name is Mike

he loosely runs a business called Taupo Sheetmetals, but there is not much sheetmetal work happening in there.

easiest way to get hold of him is to Klem at Performance Mechanical & Engineering in Taupo and he will steer you in the right direction. He also has a supercharger on his lexus powered hilux winch truck............

i would love to do a v8 1uz but i came up with these prices

1uz 1000
5 speed R box 1000
computer and wirering 1800 link as the guys down here think you can get them going on the toyota comp
cluch 700
bellhouseing R to 1uz 600
fly wheel 500
mounts 300
others 15% 800
total $6700
prices of trade me and car wreckers

please do tell me how i can use the toyota comp and get the other bits cheaper as i would love a 1uz in her but just dont have 7000 spear for the motor

stand comp is very doible, mine runs standard comp and runs sweet as. The guy i talk about in taupo has superchanged one wit 10psi on standard comp. its good keeping standard comp to get cold start idle and the ecu are a learning ecu.(dont ask me wat it means but i just know they are, seach lextreme)

Forget the 1UZ if ya want to do the conversion for under 4k, the 7mge is the best value for ya dollars. V6 commodore aint bad either, but you need and expensive adapter to go from gearbox to tf case, 7mge just bolts up to your original Hilux gearbox. 1 UZ is what 250 hp?, 7mge is 200, if power is an issue, then chuck a turbo 7M out of a supra in instead.

I would suspect LN61 seats would be a good option.

yep, , most of the interior, including seats, dash etc is interchangable between 60, 61 and 65 series surf/hilux.

can you swap the rail from your old bench seat onto the new buckets?
I swapped the seats out of my LN61 into my YN60, straight swap, no issues at all

Just a thought, but I have a mint commy V6 motor, 4-stage auto and american made adaptor with a Hilux transfer case on the back of it - all loom and comp etc ready to drop in the hole (you would need to fab engine mounts and a trans mount, and mod the two driveshafts to fit) for $2200 - that would leave you $1800 to do the rest which would well fit your budget...
