snorkle roar

Post by pagar »

Hi I have a snorkle on my toyota 3b non turbo and it roars quite badly and am wondering if a) is normal and b) if fitting one to my turboed motor will do the same I would presume the turbo eliminates blowback from the engine but if the also roar I would rather build a custom one for the passenger side so I do not need to listen to it (tend to prefer to drive with window open) any opinions? :D :?: :D

My 3B does it too, try one of them snorkel filter thingys that UNi make, a bit like a sock, that quietens it down a bit too. My snorkel is stainless steel, so I dunno if that makes a difference to plastic or not.
No matter the problem, the answer is always give it more gas.......

do you think or know if ones fitted to 13bt's do it? I was wondering cause I while thrashing around in the bush it is fine but while on the 250km trip to and from it starts to drive me mad so don't want a drivers side snorkle if it will be that loud?

I have a 13BT with snorkel and have never noticed any noise from it. I do have it turned over the windscreen but the only noise that has frustrated me is my mounting screws loose which I finally got around to fixing the other day - no 'roar' at all - didn't even notice snorkels made noises!
Sold my 1985, BJ74 MWB Landcruiser, rear locker, 33" MTs, snorkel, PTO winch, solid bars all round, spotties, AM CB etc.
Now just a 1994, 1kz Surf, pretty standard.

yes diesel thing if a gaser blow that much back through the inlet I'd be scared to start it. main question is weither turbo models are as bad. looked at a turbo'd bighorn and could only here a slight sound. just don't want next to my ear any more...

Check out this link
viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1548&p=11641&hilit=snorkel#p11641

Part of quote from above link
"N.B. I found through testing that you need to have all of the plastic inlet tract from the filter housing to the engine side of the inner guard as part of the system. This device significantly reduces the induction noise that you hear at your right ear!"

The extra reservoirs around the outside of the filter housing make a huge change in quieting the induction noise. This is on a turbo-ed 1KZ-TE Prado.
I find I don't here the induction noise at all.

I must be crazy, cos I love the whistle the turbo makes when the engine is at full torque, also, I find that when it IS making that noise, it is running at it's most efficient. better than a gofaster's big red CHANGENOW light!

That is as easy as, mate, find the South African ref who officiated at the Hurricanes game last w/e, he has an organic whistle fitted into his neck, every time he breathed out, the bloody thing chirruped

I have no issue with the lovely sound my Turbo makes when reving the nuts out of my beast it is weather or not I will be able to hear it over the induction noise coming from the snorkle... Not that I think that it will be an issue as I have found some one to make me a custom made Stainless one for the left hand side. good price too
