Re: side draft manifold
good thought but then i wont see where im going, probably wont matter though
Re: side draft manifold
Have you thought about taking the SU carb mounting flange and the intake manifold port flange dimensions in to a local sheetmetal / engineering shop to get them laser cut out and then custom fabricate your own?
OR You might be able to chop & modify the stock intake manifold? but i'm not to sure how welder friendly that cast ali is
Food for thought...?

Re: side draft manifold
The SU I had was a combination of the SU mini manifold and the 413 manifold.
Basically the original carb was unbolted and the 2 round holes made into one oval one.
The SU flange had a section of tube (original I think) This was cut at and angle so it cover the hole in the 413 manifold and was welded together. This placed the SU on about the right angle to operation. With the stock Mini cooper filter box there was about 10mm clarance on the bonnet.
Havn't got it an more and cant find any pics. Biggest issue I had with the SU was the need for a breather in the attached fuel bulb to get it to run an steep angles. It either stunk of gas or if i tried to pipe the over flow one were it wouldn't work right.
Hope this helps.
