A Class Vitara, POS.
A Class Vitara, POS.
Well I found one and now the fun begins.
Most of the hard work has already been done by dvszuk (thanks Graham) and all I really have to do is source an engine (Thanks hitbiga), fit it and drive.
The wife gave it a name when she saw the pictures so it will be called P.O.S.. I dont think she realised I had heard her, but she said it will be covered by a tarp or something to hide it from the nieghbours view. She just cant see past the dents (women eh?) and see the potential.
I guess a little paint might help to calm her view of it (Yeah Right), but that will be a wee way away.
I guess this project will not quite be from the ground up but I hope to be able to put some interesting info on here as it comes up (and pics) when the albums are going again.
My intentions (at this stage) are to just fun trial for a while (LS series and club stuff), maybe a stint at offroading with the woodhill 100 (probably not this year) before having a go at the Nat trials.

Good stuff Heath, you finally got something. Look forward too seeing you out there again

Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
Cant wait to get back in the mud either.
Picked up the new engine today (thanks Hitbiga), Fawk me are they heavy for a little donk. Saw it and thought no worries until David and I tried to lift it and carry it to the ute tray. Heavy to shift but try lifting it that inch higher when you just cant, Thanks for the hand David, I couldn't have done it without you. Next time I will think a little more and sort out a lifter of some sort (my back and shoulders are a little sore now - just old wounds and scar tissue though so nothing permanent - just don't tell my Chiropractor or doctor what I did).

Thanks to the link for the spell checker who ever put it up also most helpfull.

Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
Well here is the first shot (if this works)
In the ruff at Mum and dads.

Can anyone confirm that this sensor is the coolant temp sensor (and the one above the temp sender)?

And finally where does this missing vac hose go?

I am having heaps of fun pouring over diagrams (not) trying to trace wires but I think I will give up on the electrikery for a while and do some of the cool stuff. Fitted the new water pump but need a new cam belt tensioner (was sounding gritty) and maybe a belt and camshaft seal so I have stopped there.
I think the next thing I will have to do is clean all the clay from the engine so I can see what I am doing and get a list of what I need to get this thing going (already started the list and have feelers out there but I always seem to find more bits to get).

Bugger me it worked. sorry about the size of the first phote those of you with snail internet, Ill resize it (tried to resize it but explorer had a melt down)
Re: A Class Vitara, POS.

Can't help you with the vac hose best bet have a look on trademe for a manual for the motor, just at a guess I'd have to say its part of the immission controls and won't hurt if its blanked off but

as for the temp one can you do a pic panned back a bit .... that looks to be the inlet manifold

Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
The only manual I have is the haynes one for a 410/413/vitara so it is a little sparse on details.
The thermostat is on the intake manifold on these (go figure).
The vac could be part of the immisions but I'm not sure. Guess I will have to lift the bonnet of someone's vit and look (Scott dont leave your keys laying around).

the canister is a fuel vapor trap thing
won't hurt if its blocked off
the top sender on the two temp senders is for the aircon bottom one is the one for the temp gauge
got the chance to have a close up look at one today.... be doing a bit of work on it soon

Cheers,
after I sent in the pic I saw there were two blade connectors (senders) and one plug type. one at the top to the rear and one to the front bottom. So thanks for clearing up what my next question was to be. Nice bit of anticipation there.

Good on ya Heath Will expect to see you at the Auckland round of the Nats hoepfully competing. Doesnt old scar tissue pull
Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
Hey Dan,
You never know.
My plan was to have this POS going for the start of the next season (and have a play in the local rounds just to have a go) and do the LS season also with an eye to goin all out (we'll see) in next years trials season (sounds a little double dutch to me and I wrote it but you will figure out what I mean). Just taking a little longer than I had hoped (tracing wiring isnt my thing) but I will get there.

Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
Spent most of today scratching my ass and looking at wires. Decided to clean everything to make the job easier as well.
Whne I looked into the intake manofold I can see it has had clay dust in there so is there an easy way of cleaning this out without stripping the whole thing down furthur? My Missus reakons this thing is being turned into a bigger pile of parts and will not be running by christmas (Now I have a goal - to prove her wrong).
One step forward and one back at the mo.

Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
hi heath
personally i would take the inlet manifold off and clean it out with a water blaster or something, as well as the rest of the intake system. then you can see into the cylinder head and see whats in and around the valves and keep your fingers crossed.
a 'dusted' engine can prove fatal.... scored cylinder and/or pistons, oil contamination, valve/valve seat/guide damage etc etc.
a truck at work has just had a new engine fitted after major crank damage caused by (according to the manufacturers) 'particulate contamination of the oil'. it was found to have a leak in the induction system after the air filter, causing the engine to suck in dust and crud and be 'dusted'. not good.
myself, i wouldnt risk it just for an extra bit of time taking the manifold and rest of the intake system off and giving it a good clean. and find any defective pipes/clips etc that might have let the dust in. the filter SHOULD have caught it.
its just my 2c worth though!
hope it helps

Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
It looks as if the rubber connection between the EPI and the ali tube from the airbox may have been loose.
Hitbiga did you notice this was loose at all? May have just been loosened when the engine was removed.
Looks like a can of intake cleaner next on the list of things to get. Feck I hope it is just there and not through the rest of the head/cylinders or I may be alittle anoyed.

Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
yes i lossened it off when removing the engine, looks like a fun project and looks like your making good progress, cant wait to see the truck out there

Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
Well just a quick update on progress.
All the wiring loom is in, I think everything is connected, just have to find a battery (to swap for the one in my Courier - it has a spiral bound super shizzle antivibe one).
Fuel system just needs gas (and power for the pump).
Extractors are on but no exhaust yet.
Old engine was stripped down and any usable parts will be stored or sold off (more to come later later). No 4 had melted and the rings broken. The bore is scratched and the no 4 valve area of the head is damaged (maybe just superficial and polish out but I'll check with the head shop down the road before posting it for sale), may all become scrap ali if worse comes to worse.
Cooling system is my outstanding problem. I went to put all the pulleys on today and found that I didnt have a 16V pulley for the water pump but an 8V one (they dont fit). If anyone has one to sell, drop me a line as I need one. Radiator is ready to go but I need to sort out a thermostat for the electric fan (might just run it in On or Off mode for a while until I get that bit sorted).
Steering is getting there but I still have to sort the front common link (have one here to swap over) and the power steering pump mount needs to be modified to fit also (slot some holes and put in a packer to bring it forwards a little).
Air con pump has gone ito the too hard basket for now (I have an electric one anyway), which is handy because the front vee belts are now going to be that same size (only one spare to carry). Although that leaves a space for the alternator if I decide to lift it higher in the engine bay (Hmmm - food for thought for the future)
Thanks Scott for dropping in today after work to answer my cry for help. It's always easier to look at a running engine and compare it to the one I have. Cheers Dude, I owe you a beer.

Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
Me Scrounging again.
If anyone has a spare parts truck with a 16V engine in it I need the fuse cover (the one under the bonnet) and the big fuse closest to the front of the fuse pack (dont have one so I cant tell you what is is, hell I dont even know if I need it or not to run the vehicle but figure better safe than sorry).

Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
hey bud,
my 16v doesnt have a fuse in the front most fuse holder anyway.(nearest the washer bottle)
did you have to put anything in place of your air-con pump?
my power steering pump doesnt have an adjuster......
does yours???
cheers

Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
The power steer bracket has an adjustable portion and a hole for locking it up when the air con is fitted. Just had the mounts slotted at work so this weekend I will get the power steer on at least.
Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
il get the air-con pump off tomorrow and have a good look. i couldnt see any slotted holes but will have a proper look.
i need a smaller belt first, and ive got to replace the top hose too cuz thats started leaking now

Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
If you mlook through the holes in the power steering pulley you should see the curved slot and the hole the pump is locked into at the moment. (if yours is the same as mine that is)
Re: A Class Vitara, POS.
Well the power steer is back in. I had to slot the holes to move the mount forwards (8v mount fits but doesnt line up on the 16v) and now have to make up a spare (might just leave the wahers there for now though). I have been searching for another copper/brass washer for the banjo fittting on the power steering line (got it now) and bought a couple of micro v belts today from Repco (voucher for birthday). They arent cheap so I am glad I can get away with just one spare as without the aircon the belts ar almost exactly the same length.
I still have to source a battery and put the cooling system in place but if the weather holds long enough I may get it in overr the next few days. I might splash out on a new earth lead as the old one is a little corroded and the connector is buggered anyway (was going to bodge it until all was tested) and just use jumper leads off my ute for power.
The lead from the starter has a + on it, so I am assuming the - goes to earth. Anyone confirm for me? I havent got my manual at the moment (lent it out to a mate to photo copy a few pages) so I cant check.
