Auto oil in T/C

Cheaking my T/C oil when changing the rear output seal and the oil was a light brownish color, could it be automatic oil contaminating the T/C oil. If this so, what would the likely problems be? It's a Prado 71series

Last time I did my transfer case, it had got water in

Iv' had water in T/Cs a couple of times , turns the oil to a whiteish emolstion, this is a lite brown color with no emolstion, definatly not water.

There is a seal between the gearbox and the T/C in most (all?) one-piece gearbox/transfer case assemblies which can/does fail. In Hiluxes and Terranos I know that as the gearbox has a higher oil level than the T/C, the oil crossfeeds and what ends up happening is a gearbox failure due to low running levels, and when you check the T/C fluid level it pours out the check level/filler hole when you unscrew the filler bolt.

I would assume in your case there is a seal between them as well, since you want to keep the auto fluid and t/c oil separate... I'd be checking that... which probably means pulling the trans... yay...

First clue might be the levels of each fluid... was one high and one low? (no, thats not a personal question

)

As the drain plug was undone first, I don't know if the level was to hi , Will keep an eye on this . the level of the Auto oil was down a we bit, thanks

Had the seal changed between the Auto & T/C, Set off on our Trip to Cental Otago, On comeing down off Oldman Range, the Auto wouldn't hold (lockup) comeing down to Piano Flat, checked the AutoOil level ( just on end of dip stick). Mecanic at Gore blow out the breather pipe,Thought this may be the cause , But on returning home 1200kms (checked oil level) Gess wot OIL LEVEL just on end of dip stick. Just have to put in another seal.

ouch... so the brand new seal failed? Who did the job? I'd be taking it back there first to see if they can shed light on it...

Will be taking the seal out next sunday, giving it a close inspecation, hopefully find the reason.

A follow up, when the first seal was fitted, the prizze bar damaged the T/C houseing ,causeing a bump on the seal tunnel hole,this put a trench groove across the seal outer surface when the seal was fitted and the oil leaked thru that. All OK now.
