coolant leak or head gasket problem

Post by muskie »

2.7 turbo diesel terrano 1994, everytime i go out in it i need to top up the coolant but no obvious leaks when it sits in the garage? never seems to lose more than a litre, did one trip the other day around 150 kms and topped up 1 litre, did a 40kms trip the next day and had to top up a bit less than a litre, never seems to use any more than that, temp guage sits half way all the time and no warning lights come on.. i am not sure if it head gasket or not, genuine 130,000kms from new.. what else could it be and is there a way of telling if head gasket for sure?? thanks

actually did an oil/filter change last sunday, oil was as usual, black, not sludgey, and still appeared in good condition, no signs of milky looking oil, also did a coolant change and that was perfect green, this is why i dont know if it is head gasket or not :? engine runs perfect and as usual, just dont know where the water is going  looks like i will need to book it in for a check..

well must have been an airlock or something in the cooling/heating system, seems fine now since topping it up, will monitor it though :?

i suggest looking at the radiator cap and hose to the overflow bottle as it is only 1 ltr each time it sounds like the ammount that would normally expand into the overflow bottle and then suction back into the radiator as the collant cools down lot easier to start checking these items first after that get the sustem preasure tested by an expert
cheers and lol :)

also when you replace the water and antifreeze should always run it up with the heater on or you can get a airlock in there also
