Diff Rebuild and ratio change on 80 series cruiser
Diff Rebuild and ratio change on 80 series cruiser
Due to the 35" wheels I am running on my 80 series cruiser I have decided to rebuild and change my diff ratios. Has anyone done these on a 80 series. What ratios are available and where is the best place to get crown wheel and pinions. Other parts that will be needed are collapsable spacers, bearings, friction plates and spring for the LSD, oil seals, shims and thrust washers. All these parts won't necessarily need replacing but I want to know where I can get them before I start so the vehicle is off the road for least time possible.

All those parts will be available from your local Toyota agent.
As for the C&P, pass, do a search on the net, try Randy's Ring & Pinion (http://www.ringpinion.com).
Depending on what you use the vehicle for, why bother with the LSD?? You could throw a lockright auto locker in for half the price of a LSD rebuild............

Re: Diff Rebuild and ratio change on 80 series cruiser
A couple of different people have recommended South Is Bearing Supplies to me as a good place to get diff gears & parts.
I've been told that the 80 series front diff head is the same as a Prado LJ71/78 which run 4.88, but I couldn't say for sure. Based on my recent experiences it would be easier & cheaper to get a new 4.88 front R&P than a 2nd hand diff head anyway, but they might have to be ordered in.
Cheers
