AXT are a good kit, and ideally suited to someone that tows a decent sized boat or caravan. They are great down low, but have no top-end due to their small exhaust wheel size. Can be very restrictive above 110km/hr compared to other kits.
Good quality components, we've had one on a NZ new Patrol since 1992 and my grandfather's NZ new Patrol since 1991.....both have done well over 400,000kms, both turbos on since trucks were new.
yeah sounds like they are a reliable kit from what ive heard i think ill run with them. I dont really wana go and do a home job id rather spend the extra coin and get a kit that has been researched and tested. Ive heard of a guy in chch that fitted one five years ago and has run 17 pound since then and had no problems. Obviously he made a few more mods full exhaust and more fuel etc but yeah reliable! Im only intending on running the recommended
Eneyone know where i could find a complet turbo setup of an already turboed TD42 sarari? have ben looking on the net and found a few nice new setups but they are a bit out of my price rainge at the mo. Thourght i might be abel to find somone with one siting around, or maby somone wrecking a turbo safari?

they are too expensive i thought and mixed reviews
Re: turbo options for safaris
That link now appears dead.
If you can find a manifold, then the rest is reasonably easy. The manifold flange dictates your choice of T28 or T3 based turbos.

Re: turbo options for safaris
yep i did went custom my mate built it from scratch including manifold
Re: turbo options for safaris
Considering doing the same .What turbo did you use? How much? And what did your mate fab the manifold with? I was thinking of using Black But Weld pipe fittings and hand gas cut flanges .Mill the faces at local MC shop.Get friendly diesel shop to match pump and tune. Fab up a 3'' pipe with expansion joint. Any photos ?

Re: turbo options for safaris
Hi Gary,
We can get AXT Turbo kits, But we prefer to sell & fit DTS Turbo kits, I will scan some info as an attachment.
Turbo Kit (water cooled TD05H turbo) -$3750.00
Fitting -$ 600.00
Dyno & Pump Tuning -$ 80.00
Total -$4430.00 + gst
We will dyno the vehicle first with reading & dyno the vehicle after fitment & tune up.
We recommend changing the oil & filters when the turbo kit is fitted ( For Warranty Purposes)
The other things this motor responds to is Tappet clearances & injectors
I also emailed Tauranga Diesel who said they will do this, which seems reasonable, less mucking around than getting gear from Aussie

Re: turbo options for safaris
if you do make your own manifold make sure you put a slip joint in it ,otherwise the heat distorts it so much it keeps blowing exhaust gaskits.i put a hilux ct20 on my old patrol about 5 years ago and its still going strong .

Re: turbo options for safaris
A lesson I learnt from doing my conversion is that you need to get a diesel pump with a vacuum compensator on it (factory turbo's have them) unless you want to smoke prior to boost or lean out when on boost.
Has to be said though that putting the turbo on was by far the best thing I ever did, it has transformed the truck!!!! I was lucky enough to find a rusted old Saf that had a Safari Turbo (brand) kit fitted to it, got it cheap, stripped all the good bits and wallah!!! a Cruiser Killer!!!!
Good thing about the Safari Kit is it has a 3" outlet and comes with a 3" exhaust as well (removed the muffler, sounds good), this means good at the bottom end, but great power at the top (easily goes past the redline) and all this at only 10 pounds and 500º (max) EGR.
Cheers
Pete

Yep,
3" outlet on the turbo and 500ºC (550º is the max before meltdown).

Do you have your EGT probe after the turbo?
If so, the melting point is a guessing game.
Re: turbo options for safaris
where should the pyro probe be installed
Re: turbo options for safaris
We've just killed a TD42 with 550*C egt's! And that is manifold egt ie pre turbo. Admittedly we don't think it is an egt problem that has killed it. I ran my old motor with 550*C egts and I did about 70K at 20psi before I sold the turbo to fund current engine. At 10psi it is hardly going to effect anything and is only really scratching the surface of what it will do with a Safari kit. That was what I had and the difference between 10psi and 20psi is amazing!
The most acurate reading for egt's is before the turbo. A turbo uses heat to work so after the turbo the egt is reduced by between 50 and 150*c depending on who you listen to. Some people don't like putting it before the turbo as if the probe fails it will go through the turbo and damage it.

Did you manage to catch up with this guy from Kaipoi Repowers???? what was the outcome... Cheers
Re: turbo options for safaris
Yeah had a quick chat with him on the trail one day. 3.5K for whole thing. Can't remember exactly what they used but it wasn't factory. Have spoken to a customer of theirs who seems pretty happy with it thus far. If youy want to know more, call them.

Re: turbo options for safaris
you guys with custom setups what turbos have you used. im looking at doing mine just got to decide on what turbo then get manifold to suit. looking at using either td05h, or t28 or sim. Any ideas? Where did you get your manifold from how much? any help much appreciated
Cheers Jared

Re: turbo options for safaris
Both the turbos you have menchend are good options, just remember the lower the a/r rating the sooner it will come on boost, witch is what you wont in a diesel. I got perfomance metal works in Silverdale to make a custom hi flow manifold for me. Im in Takapuna if you would like to take a look, just flick me a pm.
Re: turbo options for safaris
There's a guy on outerlimits in Aussie planning on selling ballbearing turbo kits for patrols etc.
I've suggested he sell a basic kit of just turbo, manifold and oil lines to allow the DIY guys a good step up. The manifold is the hardest part.

Re: turbo options for safaris
whats the go with the bearing set up on turbos some are ball bearing some are thrust bearings to certain degrees? price varies greatly would the cheaper option be ok on a td42???

Ball bearing turbos spin more freely (so spool up a bit quicker), but bushing turbos are more tolerant of poor oil quality and cheaper too.
