Hilux Rear Suspension mod

Post by Bulletproof »

For off roading a hilux has the worst suspension of any truck. People have have tried many things like fitting coils on top of the leaf springs etc ,these certainly improve things but still leave alot to be desired.
Apart from fitting Rangerover coil suspenion, a relatively cheap solution is to fit a coil on the top of the diff in the middle and then remove all overload leaves to make the suspenion more pliable.
The advantage of this is, that as one side moves up the spring in the middle puts positive pressure to the side with no weight on it giving very positive traction.
I did this ten years ago and used the front strut off a180b Datsun and it still works perfectly.Any Strut would do and they come for Free on old cars.
I have alot of power and run 35s so to stop bending the leaves in front of diff,I had to fit an anti tramp rod similar to the one on the front diff.
Cheers bulletproof, lets keep the hiluxs in front.

We need to get you posting up pictures Richard.
I have considered trying this in the back of my Surf.
Any chance you could email some pictures through? (I'll post them in here too if you like).

Hi Keith ,Send me a private message with your email and I will take some pics tomorrow.
The other advantage of the coil in the middle is that it stops the leaf springs sagging as much. I have Old Man Emu wih 2 inch lift and are still holding up quite well even with the extreme abuse I give them as you well know.

Cheers Richard

There is a bit on them here, you could also fit two coils on top of each spring then thin the pack down till the leaves are basically radius arms.
You would want more length though.
