Well I got my self a 1988 hilux surf on friday nite, its got 158,000k's on the clock, VERY VERY tidy condition, bullbars shitty mud and snow tyers (30") and came with a crappy crapy player.
I have installed my pioneer cd player in it now, fitted some mud thanks to sunday afternoon.
Its got a 2.4L Turbo Deisel boat anchor under the bonnet.

Image

Plans for the future include, a rear shackle lift, winding the front torshon bars up. A 50mil body lift. some mud tyers, either 31" or 32" and a snorkle.
Here it is clean

If you are only going to go to 31" or 32" tyres, can I suggest you'd be better off with 50mm suspension lift and/or longer travel shocks than the body lift? You really don't need a body lift for anything under 33" tyres... just up the bum in the air a bit and wind up the torsion bars to suit. Having said that, maybe 33"s would be a better choice for it? It wil kill the gearing a little, but you will appreciate the difference offroad immensely.

The photo of it 'cocking its leg' is a goodie :) but it does show where some longer shocks would help out a lot by trying to keep those wheels on the ground for longer.

It does look pretty tidy for its age - most of them are pretty battered by now. 2.5" Exhaust will be another essential mod to keep the motor cool and let it rev easier.

Good score... and good to see you've installed some aftermarket mud in the correct and approved manner... factory mud is hopless :)

I thought about 33" but Its slow enough as it is, I think the zaust has already been enlargened,
Yea the factory mud fell off at the 1st corner so I deciede to use a aftermarket replacement

V cool!!
Ah memories of my old surf/first 4x4.........

I didn't have much $$ at the time, so i removed all the silencers from the exhaust system, fitted a coby style thing, and put the out let out the side just in front of the back wheel.
Performance improvement was awsome for the little expense and effort involved.
Not as good as the full 2.5 - 3" system, but works if your on a budget!!!!

I put longer shackles on mine, wound the T-Bars up, cut the bump stops and removed the front sway bar. That was all with in the first month of having it

I had 15 X 8 white spokes with the biggest off set i could get, eg landcruiser/safari offset and 31 X 10.5's.
Went bloody well untill you ran outa travel.

As for the boat anchor, i never had a problem with it. Got the head checked twice, and it was still good when i got rid of it. Bloody strange.

In the end the blow by was so much that it wouldn't turn off when really hot, and would start to run away on you down hill in low first.

I actually wonder if it was a leaking/dribbleing injector now i'm a bit more experienced with diesels.

I highly recommend a K&N or Unifilter for it, and dissconecting the crank case breather and exiting it under the vehicle.

Also keep a close eye on the rubber section from the air box lid to the pipe to the turbo. Seen heaps that are cracked and perished underneath where the stretch. I sleeved a section of old inner tube over mine

Umm, other than mentioning that your front mud flaps are best removed right now with tools rather than your big new front tyres, it looks good, and have fun!!!!

Thats a standard problem on them, that pipe. If you go to somewhere like repco and take it in and ask to see their radiator pipes, then you will probably find a flexy one about the same diameter and length which will fit and solve the problem. Thats what I have done in the past. Make sure its flexy tho, there needs to be some movement there.

Other than that, you can go to Toyota and get a genuine replacement for about $220!

yer i run 33's on mine it's a bit slow on the road, but makes up for it in the mud, diff ratios, are 4.5's, if i wanted something fast would of brought a jet plane, has the 2.5 inch exhaust and goes pretty good,

nice looking hooks. what did they cost? where did you get them and how easy was it go mount them etc. my tuck has a reasonably good looking standard hook on the front and i put a d-shakel through the drawbar but will probably look at upgrading soon as you never know what other people have done to tow hooks. its much easier to get good hooks than replace the person you kill when they come off lol.

Now that toy is going to make your body swap nice and easy :) Just fork thru and lift...

Whens the swap happening? Looks like you may need some new front springs in there... they're a bit beyond flat...

Dont know when I'll do the swap, I'll probably get the truck down from Blenheim to do the swap, so once I sort out the location to do the swap i'll start on it.

We started the swap at about 10:30 of friday, it didnt take long to split the chassie from the body. We spent the rest of the day removing the engine and other bits.

On Saturday we treated my truck to the same splitting the chassies from the body and then swaping the engine over and swapping bits accross.

By day 3 things realy came together, spending part of the morning finishing up the chassie and rolling it under. Once the body was sitting in place and bolted up it didn't take long to fit all the engine parts, bleed the brakes and power stearing. A few pumps on the fuel filter pump, a flick of the key and she was in life, backed out of the shed, a test drive and a few checks, all was ok. Time to test flex. the photos speak for themselves
