coils in a surf

Post by ToyRover »

just getting all the bits together to put a solid axle under my surf, got discovery arms coils and coil tower and the plate off the diff where the coils sit,two front diffs one for spare parts! been told to put the arms up side down for extra clearance? but i dont know if i can get a cert like that? any ideas

Interesting project.
You would need to cut brackets of housing and re-weld on top and then you have the problem of getting the camber and caster angles right for the shape of the arms. May also need to bend the arms to alighn with the chassis mounts and all this will need certified welding for your cert. Once arms are bent you will probably need to get them tested or x-rayed adding to the cost.
Is it worth the effort?

wtf? I think he realises he'll need a cert. arms wont need bending??

Should be pretty basic to whip the coils in. Stick with arms under the housing otherwise you'll have clearence issues, you lose farkall clearence anyway because the diff is the lowest point.

yeah didnt think of clearence, when mounting arms to diff how do you set up the caster?as for weilding brackets on would it be best to tack then strip diff down and weild up as i need to put new bearing and seals or doesnt it matter?would it be worth reinforceing diff? as for the cert i need one for the rover motor in it anyways

to set up caster, get ride height set, and then get a magnetic angle finder and set it to around -4deg I think??, yes tack brackets and then strip down. Although if you are going to rebuild it it wouldnt matter too much. Do some knuckle gussets because jumping can make them bend

you say use a angle finder but where do you place the it to get the angle?? yeah gussets one top and bottom of knuckle?? also how much difference is there between 4.5 and 4.8 diffs? do cert guys like things bolted or would it be beter to weild coil towers on i know if i bolt ill have to put crush tubes through! i cant find ony info on this site bout anyone putting coils in a surf only leafs anyone got any pics

heres a pajero SAS...
http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic125224.php

4degs caster is a bit much. think most standard caster is somwhere around the 1.5 deg mark, i set mine to 3deg.
to set it we put the housing on axle stands in the correct spot (location wise under the vehicle. measure LOTS of times) and put a angle measureer thing accross the top king pin bearing location and measured that tho 3degs. then we welded it in place with a few bits of scrap RHS we had lying around. ill try find pics of the tool thing we used.

here a few pics of things ive got to gether not much but most of the inportant stuffImage

hoping this will slip over surf chassis and ill bolt with crush tubes and a few bits of weild here and there

ride height seems to worry me a bit! been told the flater the arms and the panhard rod is the better just got to cut the independent out of my surf and so i can start making brackets for back of arms and cutting plates out to fit on the diff, the discovery arms are a nice fit round the hilux diff to witch i think is good hope to do wide axle coversion on front diff to so if theres a kit you can get to save time would be good

heres a pic of wat the old piece s**t looks like they wornt to happy to see me tho but it was both ways Image

measure the angle at the flat mounting surface the diff bolts to, its an easy place to access - or just weld a plate onto the axle housing somewhere and use that as your reference. 4* is good for BIG tyres as it helps the steering stability - my wheel alignment place gave me that advice when I built the MU. 2.5* is about factory for a Hilux from memory.

difference between a 4.5 and 4.8? about .3  In terms of gearing, its about the equivalent of changing from a 31" tyre to a 33" (or vice versa).

The arms over the axle is the way to go - Have a look at the post I did on fitting rangie arms to my bighorn (dead project, but I'm going to re-use the housing on my MU shortly): viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1927&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=bigdick&start=53

I doubt you would get a favourable response from any certifier if you bend your arms, just set them up properly to begin with - bent arms (last time I checked) is a HUGE no-no and won't get cert even if they are x-rayed. You should also clean the chassis section off those mounts and mount them tidily to the Hilux chassis - just welding old chassis to new will be ugly and push everything out too far (there is a tight squeeze in between the chassis and the tyres on a Hilux front). You may also have to look at skinnier springs in the front - like Prado ones or similar - thats what I was going to use.

Good luck with it - and take lots of pics for the tech/pic whores here (like me  )

Why is that? the arms are not teh lowest point and the amount of times you actually get hung up on them would be a very small number. You WILL run into space issues if you put them on top.
Just stick with all the rover mounts and run it as rover did standard. they put them on the bottom for a reason.

Its that small number that makes you wish you had... hey, theres no right or wrong way tho - do what works for you.

yeah been busy cuting and cuting and some more grinding seems to take for ever heres a pic of how i caut the coil towers now heeps better

this is how im gonna make the mount to take the arm made out of 10 mm plate not cardboard
Image

at this stage arms are going under the diff but it seems things all ways change, as for bending the arms that doesnt sound like a good idea from any angle!!!!

It will be the best mod you have ever done.
I have done the same thing with my Hilux except I used a Nisson Y60. I bought the entire Front end of a wrecked nissan. cut all the mounts off chassis and Diff and welded them to the hilux.I used a 70 series Cruiser steering box and drag link and prado tie rod.
My Caster is 3.6 which works perfectly.
No trouble with certification and handles and ride perfectly.

Iv'e stated the wrong caster angle, mine is 3.4. You wouldnt want to go much more because a hilux has a king pin angle of 9 and if the caster was nearer 5 you will end up with uncontrollable wheel shake.
My preferance was to use a range rover front end, but I have a high pinion 70 series front diff which is alot stronger than a hilux so had to use a Y60 nisson front end.

I dont know how to attach photos but you send me a personal reply I will email them to you.

$1600 a corner or there about for fox coilovers unless you are giong to race it and go flat tack over everything there are cheaper options that do the same job

i went coil overs as i didnt have the room to mount everything as tidy as i wanted it so i went for fox as im doing some weekend work for a guy who inports them so i got 2 inch x 12 inch travel ones ive set everything up all seems to work well apart from steering box so gona go with a safari one which should work ! been told i should weild some plates on the chassis where arms and towers go on to spread the load out was a pain, not much been getting done as time seems fly.
Image

would been keep to sawp bonnets but you would wanna look at mine first as its pritty ruff thats why i dont like it cheers
