8000lbs is a 3636 kg pull , if your stuck to your hubs pulling up a 45 dec bank , yes to small as the total weight is 3x your truck, 12,000lbs winch is a better bet :D

The Warn 8000lb winch is marginal on a truck the size of a Patrol. It will get you out though....eventually. I've sold my Warn winch and fitting a PTO.

A PTO's got far better pulling power and will go all day when an electric winch wont pull as hard and will overheat

but theres pros and cons, I self recovered my truck with an electric winch when it was sitting on its side and I used it to pull my truck into the garage the other day when the starter motor convienantly died right outside the garage door in the rain

one of each would be nice

hi jase
i have a asin 24volt 10000lbs which came off a 70 series cruiser which are quite rare, they are normally PTO driven on the cruisers i think?? ,, the 80 series cruiser winch is 12volt
i have seen the warn 8000lbs winch work pulling out safaris seemed ok to me a bit slow in if your alot of mud, but hey its better than not haveing one at all,our farm safari has a PTO winch on it that does work well

The Warn M8000 that comes standard is in reality to small. By almost any method used to size an electric winch you need more than 8000lbs for a Safari. A SWB about 2300kgs with nothing in it. Add gear, mud and people and it is a long way over 2500kgs ie 5500lbs. The most conservative size rule I've seen is 1.5 times the vehicle wieght and that would make the smallest winch for a 2500kg truck an 8250lb winch. As I've this is the most conservative, most would say go bigger so really a 9000lb is marginal, but they do work much better than an 8000. The one I would go with is the new 9500 winches but the quality brands not Trademe Chinese crap. ie Use Warn, Come-Up or Superwinch and forget virtually everything else.

I have the warn 8000 and as long as I use pulley blocks I find it winches quite well, it aint competition stuff though, but still pretty tough none the less. I have totally pulled it apart put new brushes in and fully serviced it, it works even better now. On a trip on the weekend I witnessed those new warn tx9000 (i think thats them correct me if I am wrong) and they really seemed to be the ducks nuts. But as others have said both have their pros and cons, I personally prefer electric. What about hydraulic, now they are exceptionally fast.

Hydraulic!! Now you are talking money!!! Yes fast and strong but complex and expensive. I thought for a long time they were the ultimate but I keep going with my little electric untill they are sorted completely and then I do one for a 1/4 of what they currently cost. I'm talking comp spec though.

A lot of the aussie comp guys seem to being going back to electric, one other thing to, if you have an auto you can't fit a PTO winch.

The only reason the Aussies are using electric over PTO is because they have Patrols and not Safaris as they are not imported like here and they dont fit PTO's to their Patrols. After Roger Mckay showed them what a PTO can do during the 2006 Outback Challenge, they started to change their minds. However they dont have access to the PTO's like we do.
They tend to use 8274 high mounts, 12 volts and run 24 volts through them

I've been selling PTO's into Aussie since 2006....Sandy Bowman has one in his 4.8 litre GQ, Wormy's old truck (now sold) etc. Pete Mailoff has / had one also, but from different source.

Patrols are NZ new, Safari's are the Jap import, the Jap market got the majority of the PTO's, and also Warn 8000lb I think

i guess the biggest advantage of going electric is that you can still use your wheels to drive to help your winch out

All winches have plus and minus going for them, although Hydraulic seems the best, then PTO, then electric - in my opinion

You can definitely do that with hydraulic winches and to some extent with PTOs (need to match the speeds), so driving wheels are not the real advantage. Electrics can be driven from the battery only (for a limited time) when your engine is incapacitated for some reason (under water or stalled). Hydraulic and PTO would need the engine to be running (not so good when you are upside down somewhere and need to right yourself).

Each has their pros/cons but the biggest factor is what do you plan on doing with it and $$$.

Although I'm sure when desperate and scratching for ideas you could always pull the plugs out of the engine (I've only ever had petrols so I dont know how diesels work) and wind the starter moter over to run the PTO and try and get yourself out of jail

On second thought, if you have a typical lead acid battery (like majority of the people have), when you are upside down the battery would have drained as well  No magic juice, no power.

Thats one of the reason (and longevity, ability to discharge/recharge, coolness) why a lot of the offroaders move towards AGM batteries. These have the acid in a more gelatinous form (e.g. Optima Yellow top, Exide Orbital, etc.) and can operate in any orientation.

can do that with my PTO in any gear i want !! and top gear is pretty bloody fast on the winch and at the wheels  and the winch has a 350chev driving it so its not about to stall any time soon

My electric winch is as fast as a Nissan PTO in most real world situations excpet for when the going gets real tough. The no load speed of mine is pretty scary, not in the hydraulic class but still up there. The difference being you can probably buy half a dozen pto's for what mine has cost!!!!!!!! I do have argueably the fastest elctric winch in the country though so that is not really a fair comparison. (there are others who have he same but I don't know of any that would be faster) The difference being that when I know I'm going to do a lot of really hard winching, I put different motors on and slow the winch down but make it last longer. Everything is a compromise!

If anyone is interested I can supply the parts or even build the whole winch for them. Just ask and I'll tell you how much and what you will need to supply. ie I can supply 8274 freespool drums that are wider etc. Also available are twin winch motor adapters etc that will give you the fastest electric winch currently available.
