Putting one in the front means when your driving around on the road your free wheeling hubs will be dis-engauged and the locker will have no affect on the steering or handling, off road it'll be like any locker and depend on the terain and cambers your driving on as to how it'll affect the steering and handling

No problems steering with a lokka, a little heavy when going real slow but apart from that I forget its even there most of the times. Hardly use the rear one with the front in now.

I have an aussie Lokka in the front and a re-built factory in the rear. When I say re-built, I mean "re-built"(took it to a professional racecar gear maker) including aftermarket soleniods. Engages and disengages instantly now.

so are the Lokka's permanently locking up the diff?? or are they another lsd?? or do they somehow detect slippage in the diff and instead of all the power going to the easiest spun wheel it sends it to both?? just trying to get full understanding, wanna chuck one in my safari as well, cheers

in answer to your question: taken from wikapedia
Locking Differential (Detroit Locker/Lokka™)
A locker locks both wheels under normal conditions i.e. the default state is locked. If a wheel is externally forced to rotate faster than the differential centre (i.e. the outer wheel in a corner) the mechanism unlocks that wheel and allows it to turn freely (but only so long as it rotates faster than the centre). Thus the locker has the extremely unusual characteristic of applying drive torque through the inner wheel in corners. Driveshaft input torque causes the pinion cross shaft to lock the centre more firmly, resisting the unlocking action. Often used in off-road 4WD applications. Can be very noisy. The traditional American racing differential is a Detroit Locker. Can be difficult to control under power in corners as the two actions of the mechanism are contradictory, the car will unpredictably alternate between one wheel and two wheel drive.[5]

They are in no way an LSD as some seem to claim and they do break axles, cv's etc if used incorrectly. Nissan safaris do real well with a front locker, you will never look back.

I think you will find the detriots expensive as they need to be imported, could be worng though. I have had my front lokka in for 18mths now with now problems at all. Have only broken a hub, no cv's as yet, but that may change with my new 35" silverstones. Now carrying a spare cv.

If your going to be spending that sort of money you might as well throw a couple more bucks in the kitty and get a selectable locker

i was thinking that but an air locker i was quoted well over 2500 fitted, best quote ive had is 950 fitted for a lockright, then another 150 to tighten and shim my lsd in the rear i think i will go for that option. Actually i think the brand was lokka, one placed i rang who installed the lockright said they are very noisey in nissans and the othe other fits the lokka brand and they said they great but cant tell if its just a salesman talking. Id like to hear more from people driving with them to get some real feedback

Maybe ask Safari Mulisha, he's looking for a ARB diff lock at the moment to "upgrade" from the auto's I think, might be worth asking him what ones he runs. Al has mentioned his lokka is trouble free

im just about to put a locker in now i was guna get an air locker but i struggle to part with pennys!!! They are just so expensive. I would love one but even bringing them in from the states they work out to two grand by the time you exchange currency freight and gst when it gets here. That is for the unit and 24v comp. Auto lockers like 500 plus fitting. I have heard such mixed reviews about autolockers in safaris. Some say they great and others say they are terrible, anyone else wana put their point forward? i think im guna settle for the auto locker unless told other wise, im not doing comps mainly just doing a few tracks with mates

i'm waiting for you to put it in so you can tell us what they are like, but by the sounds of it 'bang for buck' they are a good move.

i'm just worried about sliding down a steep slippery hill because i cant make the tight turn on a slippery surface because the front wheels are locked together :| :|
