The new toy...

Post by nstg8a »

Right, i finally have another 4wd :P

Traded my roadbike on this wee beastie...
its a nissan patrol, all the usual stuff, 4.2 diesel non-turbo, 5 speed, factory rear locker, sway bar disconnect, already has 50mm bodylift, pto winch (havnt tried it yet), safari snorkel, blah blah
One of the main selling points for me however was the nearly 6k in receipts on the motor, and it was only done in January.
already has cert for the bodylift, steering wheel (?), and 15x10 rims... which brings me to something i discovered while talking to the seller, just goes to show how small Nelson is... the big wheels and tyres i put on my surf were originally on this very patrol... wish i had kept them now lol.

really need to take it to someone that knows about these things, looks like the suspension has already had decent shocks and spring put in, definitly quite beefy looking if theyre standard.

plans? well... at the mo i am just looking at a 2-3 inch suspension lift and maybe 33 inch tyres. (assuming the local club dosnt allow anything bigger)
and replacing the ancient looking wire on the winch with something lighter and stronger...
also looking for ideas on how to mount my hi-lift jack?
and the seats have to go, they are least supportive seats i think ive ever had. does anything bolt in?

anyway, a couple of pics...

Nice truck, It looks well looked after.
nstg8a wrote:plans? well... at the mo i am just looking at a 2-3 inch suspension lift and maybe 33 inch tyres.

If you have a 2" body lift you will not need a suspension lift as well to get 33" tyres on.

nstg8a wrote:and replacing the ancient looking wire on the winch with something lighter and stronger...

Go for at least 3/8" plasma, though 1/2" is way better. The PTO winch is one of the strongest out there. Make sure the
shear pins have not wasted or corroded and carry some spares. Grade 4.8 m8 bolts make a good substitute.

nstg8a wrote:also looking for ideas on how to mount my hi-lift jack?

A piece of m12 threaded rod through a spare hole in your spare wheel and through one of the holes in the vertical piece of the jack, about 6" long, long enough to clamp your jack on with jam nuts.
This is the best photo I can find of how I use to mount mine.

Be interested to hear what the tracks like at the moment, haven't been up there for a couple of years now.
Might take a couple of mates up there if I ever get the hippo going again.

nstg8a, change that avatar too, save me having to look at another toyota

not sure about bolt in but I know someone who got WRX seats into his Safari,, think he used the standard bolt on base for the safari and made that suit.

for the winch there are two pins one at the gearbox PTO end and one at the winch end, you only need the one at the winch end the other can be permanant, I know one safari that had the pin at the transfer case go while in mud, took a lot to get him out. Now he has the one at the transfer case over rated (think he used a high tensile bolt).

This way if the pin goes (he had another one go winching himself and another safari uphill) it is an easy pin to swap in whatever conditions saw one done in a river (well 3 but only one pin went in river got the other two).

cheers for that.

yesterday also showed how hopeless my current 31's are, might as well have been on road tyres, actually had to chicken out of going through one area cos i didnt wanna get stuck and i couldnt see anything substantial to winch of.

so seeing it already has a cert for 15x10s i might as well get some, and find some decent grippy tyres to stick on them.

oh, and get my diff lock working.

Doesnt sound good the locker is vacuum operated I think Al had a similar issue here is a link to his thread and some info on what is being done to fix or remove the problem.

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=8343&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=diff+lock+safari

the locker itself are pretty indestructable it is the actuator that is the problem 90% of the time

had a slight hiccup when the wheels wouldnt fit over the hubs.... but the tyre shop whipped down the engineers and milled .8 of a ml out of the centre, and now they fit real nice. :P

yeah, they dremeled out the paint and a bit of a burr, but still not enough, i dont think they were too impressed lol, and they only rubbed right on the tip of my bumper, so a crowbar fixed that

Call me before you go James, 027 612 9288 or 544 2604.

I'm supposed to be pulling the engine out of the parts truck and gardening, but might be able to head up with you instead.

Cheers, Leigh

no idea, they were on the whale when i got it, but they do seem like reasonably good ones, im thinking they may have been a factory option or something? the moulding seems to follow the shape of the guards a little too well.

Sorry I couldn't make it James, was looking forward to seeing the new beast in action. Mothers Day and big family dinner. Dropped a hint when you texted, but the response left no doubt that after 20yrs married I would be single again if I tried anything that stupid (read: suicidal).

So, how'd the truck go, and did you get any pic's?

all good, i did leave it quite late before i got hold of you.
dunno about the 'beast in action' bit, im very much still learning all the in's and outs of driving in the mud lol.

just ended up going out appleby, mate decided his hilux is too shiny for the maungatapu, and i wasnt too keen on going up there by myself. got a couple of pics, nothing great though.

Failed attempt at a 'flex' shot...
