All those motors are cood chugging diesels hell I had (dad has now) a 2.8 and to make it easier to drive open road I added the ct20 turbo from a 2lt and that made it more comefortable than the petrol to drive but thirstier than before.

I still have a 4y in the front of mine if I was going to go through a diesek swap I would find a whole pranged or rolled surf with a 1kz, far better engine but you end up with a computer controled injected turbo, but it doesn't have the milage of a 2.8 (1kz seems to average between 10 and 14km/l) depending on load etc.

If you are quite prepared to drive at 90 to 100kmk and never overtake the 3l or 5l if you want similar or better performance as the 4y then the 1kz is the engine of choice.

You could go to an efi 2.7 petrol in the newer Hilux better power torque and economy than the carb 4y remains petrol or a 2.8 Isusu turbo diesel they are a pretty good engine and about the same price as the toy 2.8
