833 KUMHO "gone forever"

Well for a few years now the 833 Kumho mud tyre has been off the market and the factory are no longer producing this tyre.

for a number of years I've been trying to get behind the scenes to find out the truth and address the rumours behind this tyre and if they will ever make it again.

the answer is NO.

we had the kumho rep in at work today and as with other reps in the past, I hit him up about it, but today was different, coz my boss was there and it turns out that my boss has been to korea and personally met with the head honcho of Kumho and asked about the making of 833s.

he mentioned he had buyers lining up to buy them and how many would it take to do another run of them, with money being no object.

he was told that they would never make that tyre again, not for anyone, not for any amount of money, even if you ordered a million of them, they will never make them again and contrary to popular belief they will never release the mould either.

so there you have it................

apparently they were talking in engrish and when the boss started pressing for more answers they moved onto korean/engrish and when he wouldn't give up, they only spoke korean, so he has to concede defeat

come to a trial and notice that virtually no one runs 834s

they were the shit for the trialing guys in the north island

they bagged really well when run at really low pressures (0-4psi) and they cleared well in the mud.

it was what everyone was using until they stopped making them and then everyone moved onto the General Grabber M/T, which they then stopped producing as well, so that left most people at a loss, except those that have 2,3,4 of more sets of kumhos stashed in their sheds or under their houses.

every so often a set of 35" kumhos will appear on TM at prices in excess of 2k

many folks have tried other tyres, but nothing compares to those kumhos.

probably some random design flaw that would cause them to spontanously explode if 12000 different factors all happened at once....

I had a set of 33's on my Safari and at 10psi the Savero's I replaced them with were significantly better. Some consideration for the tyres been worn has to be taken into but on a heavy vehicle they weren't that good. At low pressure they were very hard to control.
Trails guys love them and no question they perform there but that is a very specialise small market. For what they were good at, they were brilliant, but to small a market to be viable. Basically they don't suit US trucks so are uneconomic!

the 833's (and the grabbers) have a "bite" on the lugs which acted like a scoop but only the top 3 to 4mm of the new tyre had this, once that was worn off they were much the same as most other MT's. when new there was nothing that compared to them for trialing
