nissan 1996 td3.2 regulus surging

hi, own a 1996 3.2 td engine surges cuts out check light comes on, and even revs without throttle, have done filters etc.could be crank senser, air mass senser,and many other things i presume,but would appreciate any solutions to get her right again. thankyou.

fault codes would be the first thing. other than that i would suspect TPS for starters.
