how to use pto...

Post by nstg8a »

ok, i went to use my pto in the weekend to drag out a stuck surf, flipped the locking switch thingy to unlock and reeled out the wire, hooked it onto the factory towing eye on the surf and jumped back in the patrol.
having never used one of these myself i was a bit dumb, and never locked it back up, never mind, did that, started the truck, and sat there wndering why the winch lever wouldnt move. oh yeah, it has a little fold away lid, presumably to stop accidental use...
anyway, got that out of the way, and still the lever dosnt move. it goes to the right, but thats it, wont move forward or backwards at all... am i not doing something? or is it poo'd?

Kinda hoping its not poo'd, having a winch gives me a lot more confidence when trying to see if i can get somewhere...

any ideas?

I'll say something really basic like you did have your foot on the clutch to move the lever??

first off we need some more info, what make of truck, standard or aftermarket winch

Depending on model, if it runs a cable from the lever to the dog clutch then that could be rusted up or broken(obious fix   and annoying problem), something could be jamming the engagement arm or the lever under the truck, the other posibility is the gears in the transfer case may not have been meshing, some run a dog clutch straight to the counter gears in the case and these are straight cut, if this is the case with the truck in gear let the clutch out a wee bit and it should clunk in
After that start looking for something bent or broken

Dosent the Nissan PTOs run directly off the gearbox and not the transferbox? I'm sure the Nissan gurus will pounce on me if I'm wrong

So I take it the problem was that the forward/Reverse wouldnt engage and the lever is locked where it is? Do you have to push the lever down through a gate or something to engauge it?

Sadam is right - The PTO drive comes off the input shaft to the gearbox and as such the winch speed is only engine speed related and not gear selection like a LandCruiser.

The transfer case doesn't need to be touched at all, to winch and drive simply put the PTO into forward and select 1st (or any for that matter) gear.

Maybe the lever or linkage has seized through lack of use or got a bit rusty?

Are you trying to engage it with the engine running and the clutch in?

If that dosent work I think I'd start looking at disassembling the lever and linkage to check its all free and working before I started looking at the gearbox and PTO end?

I dunno what the Nissan PTOs look like but can you remove the linkage and see if you can manually engage it directly on the PTO

Bugga its a nissan one  sorry mate only worked on Mitzi and Toy ones so all I can suggest is whats been said before
I'd pull the conection to the cab lever off and with a cresent see if you can ingage the lever on the PTO box

Looking at the breakdown coxsy put up there's really that can go wrong to cause this the only thing I can see is the cover lever may have seized from lack of use, no biggy just pull it to bits and grease it and put it back together.... had a Pajero pto that I had to spend a day soaking in solvent to soften the original factory grease so I could use it  I'd say it hadn't been used since the day it was made a fashion accessory
