Hi , the Mitsubishi double cab & single cab are Model L200, the L300 is the van version, both models came out as either 2WD or 4WD with petrol and diesel options with 2000cc----- 2600cc in petrol and 2.5 ----- 2.8 diesel.
If you want to do the Mt Hut road I would recommend you look at the 4WD versions.
Mitsubishi and the word Economical ( in my opinion ) shouldn't be used together, the 2.6 petrol is rather partial to a good binge session. A good friend of mine ran an adventure business that included Mountain Bikes and he had a L300 4WD set up with bike racks front and back, this system worked very well for him.

vans are no better. i have a 2004 l300 as a work van, and it drinks the gas. has just hit 100,000kms and is burning a litre of oil every 2 fillls or so aswell. my pajero is a guzzler aswell, but havent driven it in a long while so im not sure what it compares to now.
