LPG Install Q's
I'm wanting to install LPG onto my FJ40 - it's a 350 chev.
If I find a complete setup on tardme and the tank is already cert'd can I install it myself?
I think I have to get the fuel lines run by someone qualified - but am I right in assuming I can just mount up the rest and bobs ya uncle?

You can mount everything but a LPG fitter has to check and tick off the work they may make you re test the tank to cover themselves

tank test cost me $80 six months ago
run the line with rubber mounts and get the pros to finish and cert
mounts for tank have to be approved too get them with system if you can
make sure the reg is for big enough engine( big v8s should run twin regs)
or one for idle/crawl one to give full flow under power
new cost fro an install on v8 is around $5000 drive in/out
i bought an old dereg one and got it back to spec cheap
tank test $ 80
cert plate $45
lpg warrant and check $140
been well worth it so far looking at gettin another tank for reserve and range

take some pics tomorrow
it rover v8 with two barrell holley carb
sprint gas australia mixer and air cleaner and lovato reg
i removed all the petrol system seems to run better without it
just a pain if ya run out
next mission is to build an a frame to tow it with

Thanks man - photos would be great.
I'm thinking about running a dual curve ignition for the LPG/Petrol combo. Guess i'll see how it goes finding a complete setup first.

Steves right you can install everything yourself.
I have installed LPG in to 3 Range Rovers and 1 ex-army 109 all V8's and 1 was an injected 3.9 and all passed inspection
Saved me thousands of doallrs.

that towbar has to go !!
and the tanks way too low for off road its gonna move to the deck behind cab
run line with rubber mount on clips to the fuel solenoid in engine bay

and the switching unit

and from there to the regulator

which has warm/hot water/coolant mix flowing thru to keep it toasty and warm
lpg tends to try to freeze things as you turn it back to a gas
and off to the mixer

mine is simplified as it is lpg only
no petrol side or switching petrol tank is gone carby is stripped ignition is way advanced

Ditch the whole air cleaner setup if your dedicated LPG and get a restrictor ring made up that will restrict air by around 30%
with the LPG inlet mounted to it then you can easily run a hose from that to a snorkel
The one you have is for duel fuel. I put a simular one on a rover v8 with a holley it has a plate that drops when on LPG via a vacume diaphram restricting air flow and then raises when on petrol

Thanks for the photos - it helps. My tank is going to have to go where yours is as well, think i'll just build a thick slider to go underneath it.

check the clearance could go higher up if you have body/tray lift? or custom deck/floor?
mine has no body lift tank brackets hard up against deck floorbeams
and one chassis cross member slightly cropped and certed to clear the lpg main acess hatch connector thingy
would be better higher up and maybe i can fit a smaller tank where the petrol tank was

I am building up a new crawler / tough truck and it is going to run a 350 chev. can I mount a tank on the deck or dose it need to be under the truck. also do I need to find a lpg system for a 350 or will any v8 set up work on it . thanks

It can be mounted wherever you want, but it has to be horizontal if you get a tank like most of the ones you see (and want it certed). Bad luck with the last one crawler, worse luck with the rest hope you get more fun and enjoyment out of the new truck.
If you are thinking of a big V8 and still want respectable power possibly going for 2 regulators to stop or help with the freezing. I looked into LPG because it will run on stupid angles the tank can rotate around a lot if you rotate the LPG Pickup into the gas inthe tank it can get a bit hairy (ask a fireman to demonstrate an upside down LPG bottle) if alight the flame grow's 5 times larger.
One other thing with LPG is you use more of it so if you go dedicated LPG you may want 2 tanks (depending on the distance you are going).
