large width rear/small width front tyres. would it work?

Post by Weemsy »

how would using a large width rear tyre and small width front tyre work?
i know they would have to have the same rolling circumference, but what effects would it have on the vehicle? its just a strange idea i had.
has anyone tried it?? anyone seen it??
i know its done a lot on tractors/bikes/other stuff but they all (usually) are rear wheel drive.

nah not illegal, only has to be same size per axle.

yeah, i dont thinks its illegal so long as the tyres are the same size across the axle and the same type i.e. not a mixture of crossply and radial on the same axle.
i was just wondering if there would be any benefits from it? or would it just bury the front wheels in the mud with them being narrower???

yeah i know its 4wding  , i was just wondering.
got 3 sets of wheels. 15x5.5, 15x6 and 15x8. the trouble is that large wheels/tyres rub like shit on the front of my escudo and just thought about beefing up the rears and using narrower fronts just until all the mods are done to use large diameter tyres all round and was just asking if anyone else had done it and had problems?
no worries. il leave it til its jacked up before the big 'uns go on.
cheers

I know it is an exaggeration, but Army trucks around the world dont run duals on the back because they say having the same size tyre all round is best. Look at the unimogs they are all the same size.

id wait til its lifted. puting on one set now then another later, its just double handling. and its not often you will find a wide and skinny tyre (signifigantly differant width anyway)with the same diameter for reasonable price. and untill its lifted id say 30s will be the biggest. if its scrubing when full lock then you would be better trying out differant offsets. had 31/10.5s on a mates vit with 1.5" bodylift (may have been 2") and king springs, on his std rims but have another friend that had trouble with 30s (also had the body and suspension lift).

thanks for all the feedback, like i say, it was just a thought id had cuz i have rims and tyres available but was unsure.
ive worked with 'moggies' for years now and you would be surprised how many have dual rear wheels. i was working with railway 'mogs back in the uk and they had the dual rears for stability they reckoned.
hmmmm might try dual rears
yeah il leave it, not too fussed or in too much of a hurry really. but you know what its like.......i just want to play with my new toys
cheers

It depends on what you are driving on, if it is a hard surface and there is just a layer of mud on the surface you need to get through you will be fine, if there is no grip sand or thick mud you will have issues

If you are just saving your mud tyres for offroad it will be fine. :D

it was part of me being a cheapskate and part of me wanting my bigger tyres on before i did the front lift.
i havnt got my tyres though yet cuz i kept changing my mind about what i wanted to have on.
im going for 30's though now to keep things simple and see how the truck works out, maybe go for bigger treads after de-ranged has taken his welder and cutting torch to it!!!

our nissan has 37 by 14.5 maxis creppy crawlers on the back for the big ruts and hill climbs etc + we have heaps of torque to use up, and on the front it has 37 by 13.5 mickey ts so keep the weight on the cvs down, it has no problems, it still gets warrents...

On a side not from the topic....:D

My step dads ex-army mate up north runs 4 wheels on the back of his Land Rover. He takes one off and puts a rim with cable attached to it to use as a winch if it ever comes to that to apparently. Haven't seen it myself but its a clever idea like.

the main reason for the army sticking to one size tyre (this is what ive been told by an army engineer guy i know) is the same reason they try to keep everything the same, ie 99% of army vehicles now run diesel, they were trialing diesel motorcycles for ages.
the reason why....so parts/fuel/spares can be swapped round easily even taken off wrecked vehicles to repair a good one etc etc.
a bit off topic i know and nothing to do with my original question
il shut up, its bed time anyway
