td27 terrano leaking diesel

Post by prvoke »

Hey new here and was hoping someone can help me out.
my terrano seems to be leaking more diesel than its using at the moment.
Ive heard that it can be the injector pump. it seems to be comming from under the intake manifold which is where i think the pump is?
Ive only ever worked on petrol cars so im pretty ignorant when it comes to diesels but im keen to learn and fix it myself.

any help is greatly appreciated

Hi!!
Welcome top the board!!!

It sounds like you are suffering from leaking injector pump seals. The pump is located under the intake manifold.

It can be done your self, but its a tricky job, and is not really a good job to try tackle first up if your learning to fix things your self!!!

Cost you $140 to get it done at a shop.

Just quickly, it invovles making space for your self in there by unplugging as much wiring as you can.

Dissconnect the accellerator cable.
Dissconnect the TPS and mark its orgional position incase you have to take it off rather than just unplug it.

Mark the position of the accellerator linkage in relation to where it sits on the shaft, same with the aircon gear on top of the pump and remove making not of the order everything comes out in.

Remove the top pump cover. Replace seal.

Remove pump side cover and and replace seal

On assembly, make sure the accelerator linkage goes back to exactly the same place on the shaft.

Maker sure the TPS hasn't moved from the marks you made.

Worst thing about this job is that if you get half way through and give up, the vehicle is imobile to take it some where to get it done!!!!

If you allow the whole weekend and work slowly, you could pull it off.
Shouldn't take you more than a day, but you never know.

Good luck, let us know how you get on!!!!

Cheers,
Pete.

cheers for the detailed explaination, ive talked to a few people and they think this is a commong problem at the moment as the sulphar content in diesel has been changed causing this seal issue. Apparantly the o ring and seal is $26 from nissan. Ive changed the motor in my laurel from an rb20e (6cylinder non turbo) to an sr20det (4 cyl turbo) with mates and done numerous mech jobs so i should be ok tackling this.
on the other hand it does sound much more simple to dump it off to someone haha

Recondition Fuel Pump or replace Seals TD27 '91

Post by Gannet »

Hi

I have been told that you can just replace the top two seals as opposed to ripping the fuel pump off and getting it fully recon'd. Obviously cheaper but not sure if it is any good.

Does anyone have any experience, advice or opinions on if replacing the top seals only works ?

Yes, thats whats commonly done.

The seals are just replaced with the pump still in situ.

It stops the leaking, if thats what your problem is.

Fuel Pump Leaking

Post by Gannet »

Cheers .

I had my mechanic look at it and he seemed to think that the leak was below the top seals so will haveto take it off to fix it anyway.

Does anyone know if you can buy second hand reconditied Pumps for the terrano ? as apparently i will be without vechile for a week

Hmm, i would take it some where else and get a second opinion on that leak.

There is a side cover on the pump that can leak aswell, but other than the seals in the pump covers giving out, there's not many other places it can leak!!!!
