Wgtn ORE Pureora Forest Trip Sept 2008

Post by Nizsafari »

Hi all, Looking at running a 5 day (or there abouts) trip to Pureora Forest in September during the school holidays. Dates at this stage are Sunday 28th September, returning on Saturday 4th October(or Sunday)

Accommodation is by either cabin @approx $12 per person per night, there are various cabins which hold from 4 to 12 people, the cabins are all self contained with fridge freezer, all cutlery/crokery, all you need is bedding...they even have flush toilets and hot showers!! OR
:? Hostel which holds 50 people (yay communal living) OR
Tent it for a couple of buck a night..

Tracks in the area range from  1-being shiny to  5+ being Serious HARD YAKKA.. were talking tough 5km tracks which took myself and 2 other very capable trucks 8 1/2 hours kinda stuff.

For anyone interested, have a look at the following link for some information about the area, I've been there a few times now and its one excellent playground..

Oh by the way this will be an ASSN trip, so all usual rules and conditions apply.. Non Assn members are more than welcome
There will be a charge for insurance---- T.B.C (Jerry some input please???)

Minimum requirements:
Rated tow hooks
Fire Extinguisher
Recovery Stretch Strop
Good A/T's or mud tyres
PRS

Prefer:
Winch
Mud Tyres
Lockers

Fuel: The nearest fuel is Bennydale from memory.. expect to be charged a kidney per 20ltr... Best to bring all the fuel you need with you..

More to come... Watch this space....

The other way is come up SH1 then up 32 (Western access) and turn off at Kakaho Rd to go to Pureora village. That way you can fuel up at the Tihoi Pub / Trading post..... Petrol and Diesel that is.... Not the other. :D Generally cheaper than Benneydale

Yes, so we can abuse you when you get stuck :-)

I do have several spare handhelds if people need them.

Cheers, Jeff.

Which end are you planning on doing? The Kakaho end or the North block end?

I am in I think... need to check a couple of things first...

Don't forget to bring water though, you need to boil their water as it is not safe to drink. Bennydale don't have a gas station anymore, well they didn't last time I drove through there.

We will be in the southern block to start with, but we can always look at the northern block as well.

Just didn't seem to be any use at Ngaroma last time. Ask Shell and Tonka :D ! It's all ridges and gullies not a lot of line of sight. Makin sure that everyone looks out for the guy behind 'em seems the best way.

If you want I can take my new shiny truck up and attach a trailer (need trailer) and you can dump piles of water, fuel, cooking gear kitchen sink, spare landrover, beer, spare beer, backup beer, emergency beer etc in it if that makes things a a bit easier

That gobush place is pretty close as well and they have a good play area in the front block as well as kids activities too and a great fishing area in the back block, maybe we could do a day or 2 in there as well if people were interested?

Five days in Pureora?????

I can understand a day in the Ngaroma block, and a day over the other side on the tracks your still allowed to drive on, but what you gonna do for the other 3 days??

Spose theres a days drive up and a days drive back, so that leaves only one day to fill.

Maybe Jerry's onto something with the go bush idea??

Whakamaru has a gasoline alley/BP there open 7 days + pub hols. 25-odd kms from the lodge. So not too much drama if ya run short of gas.
