Ok did some research,
two track options up there. We can stay the night in either one of two huts,
Red Stag Hut or Macaulay hut. Talked to a local who went up to Macaulay hut with sir Edmund Hillary a while back. Said the Macaulay hut is a nice decked out hut. We need to book, I have the phone number so probably should do it tomorrow latest to beat the tourists
1 hour up the shingle road to the lily bank station and 2 hours up the river to either Macaulay or Red Stag.
Trip descriptions are in the 4wd book 107 offroad adventures track No's 84 and 85.
Those that are looking at going we should descide soon so we can book beds in the huts if your keen to stay the night.
I have a 94 surf with no snorkel on MT's (little more aggressive than roads) and this will be fine for getting to the huts.

you will find that red stag hut is a little small for more than one or two people. its at the bottom of an avalanche shute.

Dont follow me. i'll get stuck and need a tow..
You can get pretty close to the glacir lake with some seriou rock hopping
and then walk some. Then head back towards Mcauley Hut for the night more comfortable if the weather shits itself. If the nw rains come the river wll be high and fast on the way out. Good trip though, take your kidney belts though.
