Any compressor will run an ARB, and the tyre inflator kit they have is not really that useful. I would look at the flow rates and pressure and find something to match or better. As far as a tank goes there are air tanks on trucks busses the backs of divers with 50 times the capacity and that way you can run compressor driven tools, if you go for a large tank you can fill it (with the right fitting) to 100psi before you leave.

Go for an ARB Locker by all means, but for the cost of an ARB compressor you can get a lot better system setup with far more capability, but this is just my 2c (with sweedish rounding).
Legal disclaimer: Any information I may have provided is worth exactly what you paid me for it.

I ran 3 inch roll bars on the bck of my hilux. I sealed the main hoop and put air fittings into it. Ran a gauge, and two aro fittings (one either side). MAde an adapter for my hose line and filled it wto 100psi before going out on the trail. would hold air for about a week before it hit 80psi. Only thing I didnt do was rig a drain in both sides but didnt worry about it in the end as the air came from my compressor which had a water trap on the outlet.

if you are using an air tank from a commercial vehicle you can fill it to way over 100psi with no problems at all. if you use the correct couplings and pipe work (not quick couplings and a bit of garden hose  ) you can safely fill a tank to 150psi. use a small governor valve on the end of the tank and you should have no problems on a day out off-roading.
thats what i will be doing anyway, but i do work at a commercial dealer so its easy for me to do.
its well worth trying before you spend a small fortune. :D

Managed to pick up a Bushranger Max air from Repco last week for $217... Was going that afternoon to buy the exact same one from a 4x4 shop for $430. They must be dropping the line or something......?

thanks for the replys but The only thing with all these ways of storing air theyre not going to any good to run my air locker? and does a arb air compressor still need a storage tank to run one air locker? also whats another brand compressor that will just do tyres but not a crap one?

with a tank and yo'll run everything fine including your air locker as the others said you don't need an arb to run an air locker all you need is an air supply

if you decide on an air tank setup rather than a compressor i would suggest you use 'VOSS' fittings.
they are what we use on the Mercedes commercials and the new type are rated upto 13 bar which is 188psi.
the commercials only run between 8 and 10 bar, and much above 12 bar bursts pipe so i doubt you would have any problem with them. i personally would be very wary of using anything else, (seen too many injuries). :x
just my 2c worth :D

Hi .. RE ARB Compressor..the ARB are designed for air lockers they have a very small holding tank built into them to acitvate the locker, not just any old comperssor will work, the ARB is a excellent compressor in every way also for inflating tyres, not the fastest but right up there...PAY THE EXTRA it's worth it,i had mine for 7 trouble free years [ now have different 4 x 4 ].
If you are only wanting something to blow up tyres there are heaps of other compressor's that will do the job cheaper [ they won't be as good though ] but for airlockers go ARB ..SOME PEOPLE ON THE THREAD HAVE BEEN TALKING RUBBISH ....Good luck

Theres been a new (ex display) one floating around on TM the past few weeks for $360 :?:

If your going to go air lockers later this year you might as well wait and order the lot in from the states and save a few bucks on the whole lot

I use a 12 volt compressor 72 litres per minute works well.

Now my question, is there any advantage with alos having a 11 gallon PowerBuilt portable compressed air tank, ie will the tank have enough air to fill 4 tyres 31x10.5x15 from 18 psi (5psi once I fit tubes) of am I best just to use my compressor?

Why not plug the compressor into the tank wih a pressure switch so it will turn on when you start using air out of the tank and keep it topped up :)

Thats what I was going to do... but if the tank emptys quickly anyhow it wouldnt be any quicker than using my 12 volt compressor
