Egine running bad

Post by garic »

Hey guys just wondering if anyone can help me diagnose a problem. Egnine starts fine etc blows a bit of smoke on start up but dies down. The problem is that if I do sharp jagged acceleration jabs it will stutter and nearly die if not die. If I ease the accelerator on it seems to be ok. Checked timing that seems fine. Any help would be appreciated with this problem.

Sounds like the carb needs a clean, jets, float bowl, accerlator pump etc... :) also check vacuum lines...

Also what engine is it?

its the one litre, the car is a sj410.Yeah I was thinking it might be that and may pull the carb apart and give it a clean was just wondering if there were any other causes that were a quick fix before I go down that road

you could try the red neck approach.

Take off the air filter elbow or what have you and remove the threaded rod from the top of the carb (going from memory here so I may not be quite right, but you will get the idea).

Find a flat piece of wood (MDF or something like thast that is clean and solid ,dont use something flimsy and flaking) that will cover the carby throat completely.

Next start the engine and rev it up. while it is reving hard block the carb with the block.

Make sure you keep your fingers and any other body parts clear of moving parts.

Engine will probably stall. Repeat a few times be wary of the surface you are touching on the carb (dont damage it) hence the use of wood and not repeat not steel.

The theory bis the vacum from the reving engine will be drawing in air and this will be blocked by the wood but the engine still has momentum and will create a large vacuum and pull any crap out of the jets.

Of course if the inside of the fuel lines and the fuel bowl are full of garbage this will possible only be a temporary reprieve.

Probably worth doing a quick clean out before hand if possible.
