Post by muddyhilux »

im just imbarking on putting 2 diffs ive got together to make 1,ive got a 4.88 open diff and a 4.3 LSD diff,so what i plan to do is swap the ring gear over and along with new bearings threwout, what im after tho is torque specifications, they both out of a hilux surf, theyre 2 pinion 8",does anyone have the torque specs in a manul by chance?also has anyone done this before and ran into any probs?

keep the open & fit a locker(then its done)
all that drama & guarantee it will have no more hook up than the open(unless you drive it hard, but thats not the objectve)

It is not quite as simple as just changing the crown over to the other diff. You have to have a matched set so the pinion has to be changed as well.
To change the pinion the preload on the bearing has to be exactly right other wise the bearings will pack up or else you will blow your diff. With new bearings the preload is 1.9-2.5 Nm so you need a very small touque wrench which means the pinion nut is generally close to 200lbs ,but it has to be right and you can not loosen to make it right.

The same exactness applies to the crown. the nuts are done to 97 Nm and the back lash on the crown teeth is 5-7 thou, To accomplise this you need a dial guage and have to adjust the crown sideways by the bearing adjusting shims and then you torque the carriier nuts to 78Nm. The preload on the bearings is about 1.5 holes on the adjusting shims.

Unless you have done it before I would recommend you get help.

Hope this helps

You really want to swap the crown wheel carrier from the 4.3 LSD into the 4.88 housing, you cant swap the 4.88 r&p into the 4.3 housing as the housings have a different pinion to crown wheel distance. i.e keep the 4.88 r&p with the 4.88 housing, but you may know this already
'85 Hilux crawler, 3rz, duals, 4.7's, 4.88's, ARB's, 30 spline Longfields, 6 stud SNR4x4 Histeer, Airshocks up front, coiled rear, 40" Iroks.
^^^this shite is all about to change....^^^

oh cheers for that info jafa,i had heard somewhere that the r&p had to go into the lsd carrier as they dont fit the open diff carriers, mhm this makes the job a lil easyer
cheers again
