hilux 2inch lift

Post by waugu »

Can neone shed som light on this for me??
I just finished installing my new maxitrac springs, longtravel shocks and new u-bolts, problem is the steering arm still hits the spring even with the new u-bolts in. I used all maxitrac products. Is ther a way to remedy this problem with bolt on parts?

Did you use the flat-top u-bolt or a new round one? There is a special Maxitrac flat top one to go on the rear of the drivers side pair.

If it is still hitting, and they are H-spec springs then you probably have a bent steering arm, which will need replacing (they are not cheap, and because of this I have seen them bent back to resolve it but I strongly recommend against that - weakening the material that holds your steering together just isn't a good idea).

Cheers

i asked for flat top u-bolts and the ones they gave me have flat edges and they still hit the steering arm you are talking bout is this the c shaped arm or the drag link? I have seen drop drag links that are suposed to fix the prob by making the drag link parallel with the spring again but when I look at it even with it parralel I think it would still hit? If its the steering arm I will replace it I just need to know exactly which one your talking bout? thanks

You are better to put a drop arm on anyway, beause the ordinary arm strains the end ball of the C arm and will break it off.

I have seen it happen 6 times and to lose steering is not a nice feeling.

The better option is to use cross over steering using a surf box if your tyres arn't too big. I have used a cruiser steering box which is a lot heavier because the surf ones blow seals with big tyres.

Ok. Sorry I probably wasn't clear - all the u-bolts are flat on top rather than round as they go over the springs and need to be, but the "flat top" ubolt looks like all the rest, only the top bit that goes over the spring has been compressed in a press during manufacture so instead of having a round profile its oval and thinner to stop the end of the drag link clipping it on the way through.

If you need one and can't get one locally I have some in stock.

If your J-arm is bent (as they sometimes get) too much, then even this won't stop the clipping - and the J-arm needs to be replaced - or you can replace the drag link with a bent one (good luck getting it past the cert guy tho - I know they have been failed before)

Alternatively a mod like this can fix it, and this is certifiable (or was last time I put a truck with it on through)

Go the crossover option. You need an IFS surf steering box, high steer arms (see jafa from here) and a few other bits and bobs. This mod takes away some nasty habits that the standard setup has.

Don't know about seals blowing out on std surf steering boxes, I run 39.5 " tyres and have never had a problem with seals blowing out.
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

the only time I had a seal blow out was when I had the bump stops wrong and hit the pitman arm with the spring

Are you looking to drive-in-drive-out or do you want a cost for the parts? The steering arm modified ready to go will probably cost you around $300...

Are you running that without the torque rod? That must be hell on the road when you hit the brakes :)

Yeah, Broke it a number of weeks ago, I needed to extend the bumpstop to stop it from hitting the engine mount and never got around to doing it. I did buy an adjustable torque rod too as the one in there was bent. but then decided to go X over.
Got all the bits to convert to X over steering now so didn't see the need to repair/replace the torque rod. But yeah it makes it interesting on the road thats for sure.
