Don't know about you guys, but I actually use rock sliders for doing exactly that! (sliding around rocks). And those would not be of any use unless you want the whole side of the truck stoved in. Sure they will protect your sills (assuming the are mounted securely),but I believe that the step part of the bars should be the widest part of your truck. I often lean my sliders into rocks etc and slide the truck around (using the bars as a pivot point). It works a treat. But it also brings up the point that your bars should be mounted to the chassis rails via decent sized plate, so you don't end up with small point loading areas that can stove in the side of your chassis rails.

just aswell i dont go rock crawling then,i can just see my whale climbing some of the rocks you go over,and yes they are mounted on the chassis and they wont be going anywhere in hurry,they are there to protect my sills as the passenger side has already had a good knock before these went on, but hey i thought they look good and serve purpose to protect my sills,

As I said Vince, they will protect your sills. But it is not just rocks that you may need to lean on. I have leaned into the side of banks (when the track gets a bit tight) and (dare I say it) against trees as well. If the bars are tight against the truck and you find yourself in this situation, you are going to stove in the door. IMHO it is best to sort these sorts of issues out before the damage is done, that is all. I still have what is left of my first truck, that bears all the scars of not fitting effective protective bar work.

If the bars are tight they'll only protect the sills, if they are sticking out further they will push the body of your truck away from banks, trees, rocks or whatever your hooked up on and help save the bodywork

I found that out when I did the Firewood loop with the Wgtn Cruiser Club and they all came out undamaged and I pushed the side of my truck in driveing around banks and trees

I agree they need to be to outside of the body to be of any use.
I fitted my Bars about 10 years ago and in that time they have pushed the truck sides ways on numerous occasions and stopped it tipping over. I haven't done the extreme rock work like Rokhound does but I am sure they are strong enough for most 4 Wheeling.
I Have used 50mm x 6mm wall steam pipe and the welding bends that are precast.

The other advantage of them being out from the truck is for high lift jacking and useing the high lift jack to remove tyres in the bush.Thats why they need to be strong.

Side bars are on the list... have already pushed the wheel track out so they tirewalls hit before the bodywork, just need to do the same with the side bars. stoved in the side of the truck on the west coast last year as I was leading,got it wrong and had to reverse. normal story back end slipped into the ruts I was straddling and the bank did some panel beating for me.

Planning on doing like rok has done and have them bolt on around the chassis rails so they are easy to remove to straighten/strengthen etc. Will be using 3mm 2" pipe for them.

had the farm 12ton loader underneath them cause i was to to lazy to use a jack did not move ,and driven along side banks dont have a problem you got to remmeber my tyres are rubbing the bank ,if you look at a whale the wheel base is wider than body if that makes sense its only when theres a sharp turn in the track it rubs on the sliders,its easy to change to make them wider just get the plasma and mig out ,will take some photos on how they are attached to chassis thay aint going to move in a hurry,they do stick out just the photo does not really show wot makes it look worse is the shitty plastic arches that are on the body not the black ones,the outer bar is 7inches away from sill, if i had mine like above photo mine would to stick out 13inches to be inline with my wheels and the further out it would be more stress on the outer bar on the slider,did not want a full blown shouldnt of done that or do this it was just to give people some ideas,and folk wonder why this site is not like it used to be,

mine used to come off the bullbar down past the sill and tuck in before the back wheel and they were used to prop the truck up against anything.

I never used to worry about anything once they were installed. you just punt into something, safe in the knowledge hat your side bars are going to protect you.

Hey Vince,maybe the heading "SIDE PROTECTION BARS"might have been a better option!!
Your bars looked good to me the other day,if they where sitting flatter instead of angling up i think the boys would be happy with the "rock slider" title. Eh Rok!!

It's not a title thing, or bagging Vince's bars I was getting at. It was the fact that over 20 years of 4wding I have picked up just a few ideas along the way
If others are thinking of doing the side/sill/rockslider protection bars, then they should know just how effective a correctly set up will be. IMHO I believe that these items (if set up correctly) will save a hell of a lot more damage to your truck than a bull bar ever will. Front bars are more of a coat hanger, (you hang a winch on them, you hang lights on them, you hang aerials on them). The reason I believe that front are not as effective as side bars is that you can generally see what is right in front of you. You more often than not do not have any control over where how far sideways your rig will go.

Hope that makes sense, and no, I am not saying don't bother with front bars. I am just saying that side bars are often overlooked, and they shouldn't be.
