you will need to take a diving mask to wear around the fire, my eyes are hanging out of thier sockets this morning.

Just use the paper bag (the one you pick up chicks with and they make you wear :D ), gives us a better view as well :D , or you could just harden up :D :D

Seriously, will look at the chimny again soon....

Removing the chimney altogether and just leaving the hole in the roof will do a better job than the current set-up.
Not 100% sure why the thing doesn't work like it should but I think it may have something to do with it being too open around the bottom now.
I think the four sides of the fireplace should be divided from each other with firebricks.
At the moment the fire can draw air from all sides and the smoke can also escape where it wants. If we put firebricks in a X formation to seperate the four sides then whichever side has the fire burning can only suck fresh air from the front of the fireplace which will create a draught towards the centre of the fireplace and hopefully up the chimney. That's my theory anyway.
Didn't Curly have an endless supply of firebricks? Otherwise I'll shop around on TM. See what we can come up with. Or we can built some boxing and pour concrete in the X formation. Will also help in holding the steel plates more securely.
Another little project to give Taz01 another excuse to head back in, in a couple of weeks.

Was a bit dissapointed to find the cook drunk and fast asleep in the back of his whale when I got there but hey it was Friday and Friday night is always takeaway night so the local chinaman saved the day

new fire will fix it, but if thats not viable, then I was thinking along the same lines as cloggy but only in halves not fours, but I still think new fire would be the best fix.

you could do a tandem setup, where you cook on the back and have the front as the communal heat producing gathering round drinking fire, or whatever, but it needs a big shroudy thingy to suck smoke up and put the bloody chimney back up into the sky so it can draw.
