hi guys,
after an eventful weekend where after 1 and a half hours four wheel driving I managed to need a 10 hour recovery mission including setting my truck on fire, during that I managed to do something to my gearbox.
I have a 3.8 holden v6 with the holden 4 speed auto on the back of it, after getting the truck home on a trailer yesterday I started it up to reverse off the trailer into the garage. When I did this i realised the gearbox was slipping heaps and would barely drive in reverse or first without really revving it up, I put it in 4 low and managed to get it into the garage. I realised then that I had been told once never to tow an auto as it ruins them (i had both the transfer case and gearbox in neutral), I guess there is a couple of questions:
1) is there any way to safely tow a auto?
2) is my gearbox rooted?
the oil smells really burnt so I guess the first port of call is to change the trans fluid and hope for the best?
any ideas would be appreciated
adam

Re: help needed automatic gearbox slipping
because you had the transfer case in nuetral the trans would not have been turning (or at least should not have been) so that would not have been it. is trans fluid level correct ? not overly low? if fluid is okay then it means the bands have and are slipping. some boxes have adjustable bands there will be a adjuster on the side of the tranz with a lock nut, usually tighten till just starts to get tight and back off quater turn. check with someone with a holden manual. hope it is of help. cheers

thanks pagar
I checked the fluid level and it seems alright, I will look for the adjuster tonight and model number so I can find a manual for it.

also just to be sure did you have the engine running when you checked the fluid level?
