Its all happened before, you're not the first 4wder to come out of there with a black eye. Never been there myself but I believe there is some private land mixed in there. The local Rotorua/Taupo guys know which areas are dodgy. It's a whole different story whether that guy actually represents the true owners tho?
Check out these doc maps and go to the topo map no. then use the boundry overlay to see if you actually are on doc land or not - can be surprizing sometimes ( there are funny titles all over the place)

Whirinaki Forest

Post by PeterVahry »

The Whirinaki Forest is in several parts with large areas of private land sandwiched between. DOC have recently identified the northern block as an area for 4x4 use and for specific information contact Nick Doney of DOC (07) 3661080. Maps of the area involved are available on request from Nick.
The driving in rivers is not condoned by DOC as most provide a water supply for locals.

DOC are working with four wheeling to provide opportunities to drive this forest area and we must not wreck this hard fought for relationship.

Peter, nice to have you on board... will look forward to more pearls of wisdom like this... One of the problems we face is that, as mentioned, there are no signs, and unless you had popped that bit of info we would still be in the dark about the situation.

Is there a central repository for this kind of information (other than in your head, can't go attaching that to this forum now, can we? :P) that can be attached/linked into the site for us to refer to for situations like this?

Keep up the good work on all our behalves.

Thanks Steve, one of the problems with generating a list is the speed of change that is happening.

An important thing for four wheelers to recognise is a subtle change within DOC over the past year where they have conceeded that maybe not all 4x4 activity is a problem and given the opportunity, we can be useful allies. There has been a lot of quiet work by the NZFWDA with DOC people.

What this means is that 4x4 groups should not necessarily regard DOC as an enemy but should talk with them and see what opportunities are possible in a conservancy. We need to show that we are interested in the future and working together.

This is actually very important as most conservancies are starting their 10 year management strategy (CMS) plans and unless it's allowed in those plans then it can't be permitted! Ask your local DOC office about their CMS review planning and follow it every step of the way.

Remember that if a DOC office is continually getting polite inquiries about 4x4 opportunities and the planning processes then they are going to realise there is a significant level of interest and that it should be addressed.
