Richard, what ? and how? have you sealed up your clutch housing, mainly the clutch fork area, this is one area I have had water issues with. In deep water I use the no clutch method,and if I stop or change direction I do so by starting in gear, makes for some fun driving.

Hi Fitzy
I haven't had to seal around the fork area on the hilux because the rubber is a good fit. My problem was the breather at the bottom of the bell housing.
After going through 3 rear crankshaft seals with gritty water being forced up behind the flywheel, I thought something has to be done and copied the same principle as on the bottom of starter motors.
I drilled out the breather hole to make it round and then tapped a bsp thread to take a pipe fitting that has a hose fitting on the bottom end. I then fitted some heat shrink over it and squeezed the bottom end together to make it flat.
This stops the water going up but doesn't stop it draining
I have been involved in a couple of rescues between 3-4 ft deep and sat there for 5 mins and then driven out without any problems

I wouldn't say it exactly like that Instag8r.
It is (as i'm sure Richard will tell you as well) natural progression. When you have been into 4wding as long as Richard has, there are always bits you want to fix or adjust, and you find these things out by using the truck, A LOT!.
Once you start, it is hard to stop, My truck does not have one factory part that has not been modified to suit my needs.

You could try using a colander to spin dry your twigs etc for starting fires

Just need to find out where your intake for the heater is and chuck some mesh over it. Wont stop the water but will stop the rest of the crap, stops the hamster getting in there in the first place. no hamster=no rubbish

A permanant accessory of the hilux is a 500x500x4.5mm piece of polycarbonate for extra safety when extreme winching.
I have put 4 suction rubbers on each corner to stick to the windscreen and the advantage is you can see what is happening to the winch wire.
Polycarbonate is used in aircraft windscreens and is virtually unbreakable.

I'm pretty sure the stuff in plane windscreens is a bit thicker than the stuff you've got there

I agree the stuff in plane windscreens would be alot thicker.
All I'm trying to do is spread the impact and slow the missile down with something virtually unbreakable, and it has to be better than nothing at all.
When polycarbonate roofing came out,placemakers left a sheet on the drive thru floor and let all the trucks drive over it and it still didn't break so is pretty tough.
A person still needs something over the rope to kill it as well.

Even if the force collapses the whole windscreen into the truck I guess its better to have a bit of poly wraped around you than the sharp end of the cable

A thread is talking about lift blocks. I bought a length of 50mm nylon that all the truckies use on their rigs.
Mine are 35mm high on the body and 75 on the deck as I cant see the point in going any higher than is needed as the centre of gravity goes up.
To give more flex to the body and to stop it cracking , I have fitted valve springs at the bottom and used high tensile bolts with nylock Nuts.

I know im going back but what did you do with your leaf springs before you went with your mid leg ( spring set up )to gain artitulaltion im keen to get more travel with out going as far as you have as it my daily drive and i dont have your skills ps your latest video is bloody fantastic i need to be in the south island

All the leaf springs were OME with the 2 inch lift
On the front I had coils over the shocks which stopped the front sagging. I used daihatsu charade rear struts which gave me the top and bottom mounts. Spring overs are now available on the market.
On the rear I removed the 2 overloads and replaced these with a couple of ordinary leaves that I cut down off an old set and put the coil in the middle

For anyone running ARB lockers one of the most important mods to make is to replace the fuse that comes with the lockers.
It looks like this, and is absolutely useless as moisture and shit gets in and the connections go rusty. The compressor needs 30amps and if the connection is no good the compressor struggles and goes real slow.

I have replaced mine with one of these

They are a completely sealed unit and for added protection I have put petoleum jelly around the seal as well .It has been like this for many years now and the compressor still pumps up in about 10 secs.

Here is a picture of the coil over the OME front shock . It is made from the rear strut from a Daihatsu charade.

Do you live north of Christchurch ? The reason I am asking is im going to Ikamatua next weekend and I will be with a number of CHCH trucks . Someone would be willing to transport them.I know Paul Delis is at Kaiapoi and that wouldnt be far from you if you where I think you are.

A river crossing that turned to custard.
In the 90s I was part of the Coast to Coast committee and our trip for 1999 was Greymouth to Conway.
I was up at 5am in Greymouth and the rain was bucketing down. Les Gill and myself were to mark the route ,drop marshals off and see whether our crossing of the Ahaura River at Kopara was fordable.
We arrived at the river via old Ahaura Rd and crossed the river which seemed OK.
At 3pm in the afternoon radio contact showed the first teams were about to reach the river so I crossed and painted stones for the entry and exit points and then left to mark the rest of of the route.
Half an hour later this is what happened. Motors in three trucks were written off.
The video footage was taken by John from Rotorua

The result of this was the Hilux was wrapped in danger tape.
