roll cages, roofs, and the lack there-of!

Post by Crankshaft »

Hey, i have a quick question about roll cages.

I own a landcruiser SX5 (70 series) short wheel base, and i'm wanting to replace the roof with a roll cage. I was wondering what sorts of unforseen problems / expenses i may come across, how difficult it is to get those sorts of things certified, that kind of jazz.

Those are some idea's i've been tossing around. Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Those cages are easy on a 40 since the roof unbolts anyway, as do the doors and the winscreen and the rear door.

Yours is a Bunderra I take it? 2.4TD? The entire cab is a single shell, nothing but the doors removable. I would expect you to face some pretty serious scrutiny if you start chopping the body shell apart like that.

Best bet is to go talk to a certifier before you begin chopping, and ask him if he needs to inspect anything along the way to stop you having to back-track. Also look at having the cage made to regulations so that you can get a cert for it by itself... might make life easier.

My (totally unfounded) 2c :)

This might sound like a stupid question, but where would you find someone who can certify that sort of thing. What sorts of things would they look for throughout the process? Do you have any idea how much that sort of thing would cost?

Thanks alot!

Low volume certifiers are all over the place. Have a look here:

and for an explaination of the codes by their names:
