Im getting ripped off

Post by turoa »

Over the last week or so a shit load of stuff has been going missing from up the back of our place. They must have known about up the back of our place for awhile as doors have been left open. I hadnt thought much of it as I guessed it was some school kids trying to score something for free (but we dont keep anything we thought was worth stealing up there). But then last week I noticed someone had stolen the distributor and leads and radiator etc out of our dead daewoo, I wasnt too concerned. But I got a call on friday night as the neighbour caught someone poking around up there and he had found a bit of stuff left behind (they claimed they were taking a short cut). So I went up for a walk and walked down the fence line and found an old nissan running board and some lights and a gearstick and other bits and peices and then thats when alarm bells started ringing. I walked up the back and noticed some arrogant asshole has stolen ALL scrap alloy we had up the back (dad kept for melting down and casting stuff, there was a shitload there), they have stolen ALL radiators that were there, a stainless steel beer keg, and generally any other alloy or copper scrap they could get there hands on. INCLUDING 2x landrover gearboxes, a fiat FWD gearbox, a set of range rover p38 wheels painted back with stuffed tyres, a set of alloys and rally tyres that were my dads fiat 131r rally cars rally tyres and generally anything alloy copper or stainless they could get their hands on.

Anyway, on the satuday morning I drove down to the scrap guy to see if he had seen anything, and he hadnt, but on the way down the road I noticed a car sitting in the top end of the marae near us' car park (they had been walking down the fenceline and into our place) and thought they wouldnt be stupid enough to come at this time of the morning BUT HE WAS. Neighbour caught them at it again. cops were called and he took down all the details etc

When I came home tonight I noticed some cars in the carpark so I drove up the back before heading to the house and I swear I saw some asshole duck behind a truck that was parked up there. I reversed out of there as I didnt want to confront him by myself.

The rego of the car I know is involved is YY4788(silver honda integra), and I have the regos for the other cars I saw tonight (blue subi wagon and white toyota corona?? possibly).

What can I do to stop the asshats. I have one set of aloys left up there but they are still bolted to a car (one has the wheel nuts off but the retards didnt bring a jack that lifted high enough because its still on it). I estimate that they have pinched over $1500 worth of our stuff and they have been bringing tools to unbolt stuff.

You obvisiously have not had anything stolen and had to report it to the police. I don't even bother anymore reporting it as it takes to much time and they won't do anything anyway. Cops, what cops. NZ police make the keystone cops look like a professional SWAT team.

wait until they are up there and then go and take 2 tyres and rims off each car ( not knowing distances not sure if this is possible) and place them carefully in the bush close. Then ring the cops and let them deal with it - or alternatively get a video camera and record them taking all this stuff.

Low slung barbed wired at about knee/ankle height, it will make it harder for them to get in and out

Go have a talk to you neighbours and ask if they see people/cars around the area acting dodgy the call.

If you see them around and don't want to confront them them get on a PA/loud hailer and adise them in a nice loud voice that they have been seen and their details have been passed on to the police and then call the police.

Leave a note on their car saying that they have been seen in the area

Although the police may do fck all, the first, second, third time they will eventually stop collecting tax and do their jobs. If the cops don't do shit tell them that you are following up by going to the media, MP, local council etc.

If they are aware they will/may watch out for cars parked in the area and at least talk to the registered owners which may stop them. If you have rung them a number of times then they will react eventually

If you do nothing then expect them (the thieving scum)to gain in confidence and keep coming back

At least if you do call the cops then theres a record of your attempts to do things the "right way" So then, when you do get a pile of guys to meet there and either damage cars, people or both   then you can say to the cops "i tried to do it the right way but cause you guys didn't respond i was left with no options"

yeah our cops are not worth crap for service, I had a guy come onto my property roll my HQ on its roof (empty shell) and proceed to steel my LSD and shocks etc. (all this on my front lawn) my neibour asked what they were doing and the said in pig english that they had permission but fortunatly he took a picture through the window and took down there # plate, I got the owner details through a mate and went to there house and took a pick of them working on there HQ went and saw the cops and got told we will look into it when we get the time but cause the value was not high enough they would not likely follow it up so I asked the desk sergant if I went and busted in there heads with a bat, shot there dog and took what was mine back would that be okay? got read the f'ing riot act. needless to say no diff.....w4nkers did nothing. I would leave a faulty electrical apliance conected to the power supply in the car with a bit of barbed wire attached. its about time this once great nation of ours taught these theiving bast4rds they cannot get away with it. to hell with the PC brigade shoot em first bury them second.....

In a situation like that I would (if I was that angry and pissed off) inform the cop that you were going around there right then and there and that you would be calling 111 when you arrived (they HAVE TO attend all 111 call's. Advise that if they don't attend or there is trouble that you will be also going to the media and ask for the cops badge number so John Campbel can ask him directly why he did nothing about it.

Also state for the record that you have no intention in harming anyone but that you defend yourself and your personal property.

When you get there, call triple 1, put them on speaker phone and ask what they intend on doing (THEY WILL TELL YOU TO CALM DOWN AND GO HOME) ignore this advice and go confront them in a calm and collected manner and just say that you don't want trouble but the police are on their way and you want your property back.

If they offer you violence the operator will hear it all and the fuzz will be there in no time

I have been in similar situations and it always pays to remain calm, professional and collected but leave no doubt (to the crimes or the police) of the outcome

Turoa, between you and your old man, (sorry Antony) i am sure you could rig up a video camera and record the little pricks doing the deed, also leave a jerry can of petrol up the back as well, just make sure it is full of sugar, they will steal it and definitely put it in their car, you may not get your bits back but you will be full of pride when you pass the car tomorrow on the side of the road with a stuffed motor, cost ya thirty or forty bux but the feeling would be nice  just don't forget and use the fuel on your own car :D

Quite the opposite.
Came home and found two street kids in the house packing up my stuff. Had the first cop car there within 4 minutes, 3 cars there within 6.
Caught them 3 blocks away, 12 months sentence for one, 15 months for the other. One of them was out and making repayments to me in about 7 months.

Besides, a police report is a necessary part of an insurance claim. Maybe the cops suck where you are, maybe they don't like you. But I've never had a problem.

Scrap metal theft has gone through the roof as the price has increased. I know of houses that are vacant and have had all the copper stripped out of them.

The closest scrap man in lying. They should (as in required by law) also have a written record of everything they bought and who from. Dont have to show you it but you can ask.

To prevent it make it hard. Nasty fence losts of piles of barbed wire lying on the route they take etc etc. Theives are lazy so they will always go to easy to get to lots of goodies for not much work places.

Catch them at it tie them up/hold em down and call 111. (just add they are not compliant and that they were in your house/shed) If you are by yourself sit at there car on the road and ring 111 saying they are on yuor property and you are at the car. any luck a dog handler will turn up. 99.9% wont want to get into a confrontation. If they did they'd be a the local liquor store/gas station

When we had issues with our neighbours and the police, landlord etc didn't want to get involved. So we got all the neighbours together and sent them a letter basically saying the neighbourhood wants her gone, we also sent this letter to the police and her... police sent a statement back about how much of a PITA she was (which was about as much as they could do due to the stupid Privacy Act) After getting onto just about everyone including CYF about her handicapped son being told to swear at us, she finally left. She had been intimidating people round here for 12 years, by her own admission, three neighbours had moved out, including the people who we bought the house off. They didn't think we could get rid of her, but 6 months after her first attempt at intimidating us, she was gone...

so in your situation, I would go door to door, tell the whole neighbourhood about these guys, then just leave a note on any car you see (print a few and ask you neighbours to do the same) saying something like:
--------------
To whom it may concern.

We have noticed items going missing from our yard, our neighbours have been informed and asked to keep a record of all unusual activity. The police have also been informed and we will keep them updated.

If you see anything suspicious please contact xyz at xyz Police Station on xxxxxxx

Kind regards

xyz

As if it'll do any good the Scrap Metal Assoc has a form you can fill in to report stolen metals. It is designed to highlight bulk type thefts and may not be any good for odds and ends but if you can identify any particular items then it is one official route to take... http://www.scrapmetal.org.nz/reportstolen.php

Had similar problems with stolen fencing material over a few weeks at one job I was working on. Dug a few holes in the vehicle track they were using and covered with canvas. Went back the next day to see all the effort they'd taken to pull their vehicle out.

If the pricks are walking with stolen gear then maybe a few holes in the track would lead to twisted knees/ankles etc  I liked the knee-high barbed wire idea. Spring loaded battens at knee-height can be a frightening experience too.

There are some reasonably priced electric fence energisers powered by 6 D sized batteries. Connected to an "insulated" target (e.g. car, drum of metal etc) can be quite good  . If you want to go further then there are some alarm systems you can get that monitor electric fences. They detect the pulses going out and when someone gets a zap, cuts the fence, the pulses don't return and the alarm goes off... used this system around an isolated farmhouse I lived in for a while once.

Good luck on sorting it out...

do you have a firearms licence or anyone in your family household. for this its best to not have any firearms anywhere near your property. once suspicious activity has been detected and confirmed call cops and threaten to shoot offenders the cops don't know if you got a gun or not, guaranteed attendance right there, just gotta make sure the offenders are still there when cops arrive looking for you and your gun. Risky but may just work

No remove some of the air and locktite the valves in place and block them. Then get a can of expanding foam and fill the exhausts. Drizel the window edges with loctite and glue the rubber to the glass, squirt brake fluid over the roof and boot/bonnet. The final act is to cut up a pile of paper clips and push them in the door locks and then squirt the locktite in there also (dont forget the boot and fuel flap/cap if fitted).

Just make sure they are iligitimate visitors and not just some hapless unlucky smuck.
