project slutlux

Post by Poacher-HILUX »

I started about 1 year ago buying a 1987 2.4d dcab hilux.
shes mint condition with no rust. low km's and a healthy gutless 2.4

The first thing i look at doing was a set of rims and muds.
So a trip down to my 2nd home ( 4x4 panels and parts) and i had a set of good condition 15x7 white spokes for a very good price. along with a new snorkel to

Next tyres... I shopped around and not really finding anything cheap except bloddy firestone ATX23's in 31' , this was my worst mistake to date. These tyres are total shit and i recommend to not buy them! i wont get into detail why there shit!

next on the list was shackles and spring lift.
The shackles came easy as i found a set at 4x4 panel and parts 2inch lift at back and 1.5inch at front
NOW leaf springs..... i was scanning trade me and found a full set of 4'inch lift heavy duty tough dogs for $500 and they were brand new!! what a bargin. these were fitted 2weeks later along with extra long travel muroe shocks in front and old man emu's at the back. I aslo got extened brakelines front and back from sims brakes for $30 bucks each.

diff breathers were added next as a trip down a local river ended badly with the old lux being .......well lets say washed inside and out when i got stuck in a deep hole.... it didnt look deep at the time :D

After a complete oil change diff, engine etc etc shes was back and running.

just recently i have added a new winch bar that houses my Warn XD9000 winch.

IF ANYONE CAN EXPLAIN HOW TO ADD PHOTOS ON HERE IT WOULD BE A GREAT HELP THANKs.

THE LIST SO FAR:
snorkel
15x8 white spokes (spare set)
15x7 white spokes
31' muds looking for 33's
diff breathers
4inch leaf lift
2inch shackle lift
extra long travel munroe shocks front(crusier)
extra long travel old man emu rear shocks(safari)
winch bar
warn XD 9000 winch
tow hooks front rear
9m snatch rope
2x 3m tree trunk protectors
2x 4.75ton bow shackles
The list goes on etc etc etc

I am not going to do a body lift as i see it as a waste of money for me. the trucks already high enough.

photos to come when i find out how to upload them,

aggree with statement about body lift being a bit of a waste, I wouldnt do it either unless to make way for engine. the 2.4 will have trouble spinning 33" muds. if you're gonna keep the 2.4 may I suggest bias ply tyres that dont have to spin fast to clear mud! anyway, lookn good :D

Going to a taller tyre will suck more power as you are altering the final drive ratio. Staying with a skinny tyre will only help a bit.
You would be better to change your diff ratio at the same time you go to taller tyres, it will help retain a bit of the 'power' you have now.
You probably have 4.5 ratio diffs at present, so going to 4.88 ratios with 33s you will find it isn't to much slower than it is presently on 31s.
I used to run 33/12.5/15 tyres on my IFS 2.4 turbo surf and it wasn't too bad on the road, off road was fine, you just hit low box a bit sooner than you would normally have to.

OMG  almost like ya Zeroxed my hilux, removed the canopy and fitted smaller tyres

But seriously, almost identical mods, shackles, springs, shocks, winch in custom bar, even the spots are in a similiar place!!!

I will post a pic as soon as I find one

note, I would check ya brake hoses in the front

Image

I would look at getting longer soon
Got a Daihatsu Something, hasn't got a Daihatsu engine.... or diffs.... and it doesn't have windows.... or doors.... but its got tyres.... :)

The hoses are already 10cm longer than standard.

like my shocks at the front still have more travel but somthing is stopping it. Its not the brake hoses

I would look at moving your front brake hose top mounts down on the chassis before you get any more flex, they do look like they are pretty much at full stretch in the photo.
Loosening the clamps on the leaf pack will allow the springs to separate and give more droop.
If you want any more flex than that then you need to follow Haynzys directions

Swap in an IFS steering box and add a few bits, check out Tims thread that shows it all
