Doesn't like being cold

Post by taxi »

Have a 86 hilux surf with a 3y motor which doesnt like the cold mornings at all it runs rough and tends to stall until it warms up then it''ll run good.Ignition system and timing all check out good, auto choke seems to be working as well.
Can any one help out or have any ideas, could it possibly be the EGR valve

Does it have EGR???

Carburator icing? - friends 85 hilux gets that - can't run through the snorkel on a cold day, needs to get the air from over the exhaust manifold.

Should be a pipe from the carb to the manifold with a bypass flap you turn between summer and winter.
SWB V6 Paj with one or two mods ;)

Sounds like the auto choke might not be makeing the engine rich enough to run properly when its cold?

cheack the air tube that runs from exaust manifold to air inlet is not busted/missing.

also check the high idle is working. i've had the odd time where it gets dirty and sticks.
i had a 4y of roughly that age many years ago. a bit tempermental at times to. don't remember it having egr.

I had the same issue with mine, if you grab the manual you can work out the cold idle screw, mine over the years had the cold idle screw set so on cold day's it idled (or tried to) at about 300rpm.

The fuel half of it was good but I buggered that up finding the idle screws  if you speed up the cold idle to about 900 - 1000 rpm you may find it behaves as good as gold again. I will have a look at the icing issues as I have a snorkle on mine but havent seen anything yet (but have not looked for it)

Mine warms up quick enough so it may not affect it as badly, check the thermostat opens and closes too.
Legal disclaimer: Any information I may have provided is worth exactly what you paid me for it.

Well did run better this morning with the hot air intake working, might have to look at the fast idle screw adjustment as it still doesnt idle very well untill it warms up a bit, thermostat is new
