Hi all,
Am interested in what the ratios are in many of the Japa PTO winches around. Not sure how they work within the transfer box so any info there would be good as well but am mainly interested in the drive ratios on the front of the truck. Also, what are the working weight loadings for these winches?
Am considering the potential to adapt a motor to the drive... anyone done similar, i.e. used these away from the PTO drive?
Cheers,
Phil

Re: PTO winch ratios
As far as I know the Nissan PTO is a 33 to 1 reduction in the winch itself, and is rated at 6000lbs
'85 Hilux crawler, 3rz, duals, 4.7's, 4.88's, ARB's, 30 spline Longfields, 6 stud SNR4x4 Histeer, Airshocks up front, coiled rear, 40" Iroks.

Re: PTO winch ratios
hmmm, OK, only one reply thanks Jafa. That means either ratios aren't known on other winchs or they're all the same
Kinda was expecting to be a bit more of a reduction and am surprised is as low as 6000 lb.
May have to reconsider a few key componenets to some half-arsed plans
Was interested in how your Milemarker winch is going Jafa? Did some research on them after reading about your installation. Where'd you get yours from?

Re: PTO winch ratios
i think the toyota ones are 30:1 i have no idea what they are rated at
my 4wd is not a truck
old mercedes never die but sometimes they do need some love
older cars are good, mercedes are better, older mercedes are the best

Just looked at their website. No milemarkers, just winches of many descriptions at 20+ tonnes
Are ramsey and other hydraulic winches able to be run off the power steering pump? Guess its a function of the required flowrate and whether the PAS pump can deliver... and resevior requirements.

Sorry, my mistake, it was http://www.winchesplus.com
Mine runs off its own pas pump, it depends what you want it to do, just a normal winch for normal 4wd applications, a setup like the MM is ideal. You have to spend much more $$ to get a setup like a winch truck has. The MM setup comes complete, just hook it up and go.

Cheers Jafa, I got it now. Heck these guys are just down the road from my brother in law, might get him to do some negotiating for me

I use a Nissan LD28 PAS pump connected to a Gemmer Land Rover steering box so may need to assess whether I got enough flowrate left over for any other options... may need some careful thinking over. May be a better option than adapting a japa PTO winch to hydraulics etc like the half-arsed plan was shaping to...

Re: PTO winch ratios
whats stopping someone from making a step up type gear box and puting it in line on the drive shaft to the PTO(Toyota/nissan style PTO)would only need 2:1 increase would make quite a differance.
when winching with mates Nissan PTO the differance in cable speed from the first layer on drum to top layer is quite a lot.If you could get that top layer speed on the first layer with a simple step up box would be worth it???
That would put more load on the drive shaft/gear box end correct?
Would bring the winch speed closer to wheel speed in the case of the Nissan too/
