84 FJ40 coil suspension info?
I'm thinking of ditching the leaf springs and going for coil springs on my 40. Coils all round would be the go. But I was thinking of doing one end at a time to make it easier on my wallet A hydraulic suspension lift kit in the future would finish it off.
Has anyone any advice for me? Websites i should visit for more info?
Cheers.
Pete.

Re: 84 FJ40 coil suspension info?
skid. I drive it everyday.
Today I had 6 passengers in it and I was towing a tandem axle trailer with 3 quad bikes on the back. The ass end was so low, it was pissing me off. On the way home the lights where pointing so high I had people flashing me.
So cause I don't use my cruiser much off road, you think I shouldn't get a coil suspension kit in my truck?
Mate, most 4X4 trucks on the road today don't even go on a 4X4 track. At least I have a go, now and then.
So, I want to be able raise or lower the front or back of my truck with hydraulics and gain more articulation. So what if it doesn't get used all the time on a track. That's my loss. But the more it does get used off road the better I get at handling it.

I could. But I like the old school look to much. And I've gone this far with re-powering it and getting it street legal. Going with coils suspension is going to happen someday. I'm interested in hearing what others have done.

I remember seeing this truck. That is one hell machine
(I wish I wish I wish)
It looks like I have a good bank manager. Truth is, I'm like everyone else that has to stick to a budget. It's bloody hard.
It's a dream to have a truck with that kind of set up. That's to hard core for me. To have a budget version would be awesome. So if anyone has any pointers I'd be very greatfull.

Re: 84 FJ40 coil suspension info?
possibly airbags in the back for adjustable ride heights and added weight carrying capacity for the odd time you're carryin/towin more whilst leavin the current setup stocko? means save money, onboard air and fully variable height adjustment set ups..
i know a guy off here used them and liked it..
just a thought fella..

Re: 84 FJ40 coil suspension info?
Are you saying I can use air bags using leafs niblik?
Re: 84 FJ40 coil suspension info?
I'm sure I've seen a 40 with coils in the rear and leafs in the front. That would be a cheap option? Maybe a good start.

How did you go getting your truck unstuck the other nite? Pictures?
Re: 84 FJ40 coil suspension info?
I wonder if these things would do the job?

It's a way cheaper option than replacing leafs with coils.

Re: 84 FJ40 coil suspension info?
Pete, I'm slightly surprised that you still have the cart springs on your 40. It would be one on the first mods I would do if I had the cash. Mainly coz the bloody 70 is a pig on the road
Whats up with those polyair, how do they work, what do the do, does it just pump up your suspension under load. Does it improve the on-road ride at all??

Hi Bubba. I guess if i was a hardcore off road man that would be the first thing I'd do. But I'm not (yet). I'm slow AND I'm a slow learner. But I do use my 40 to tow, a lot. And being a 7 seater. When i get a crowd of heavy lads in the back as well as a full load on the trailer, the ass drops, heaps.

SO. I was thinking coil springs with adjustable hydraulics. But the cost of that would be right up there I'd imagine. So air bags in the rear might be the cheapest option. I'm like you. I don't know much about them. But the ones I'm looking at are off a FJ40 so they should bolt up easily. I'm just not sure of the pros n cons of them.
Re: 84 FJ40 coil suspension info?
Can't you just dial up some stiffer shocks from the cab, isn't that one of the reasons you have adjustable shocks?

Nah. The adjustable shocks only soften or firm the ride. They don't do anything to ride height.

Re: 84 FJ40 coil suspension info?
How do the change your off-road performance? Don't say less flex coz I don't think thats possible
As a bolt-on they appear to be a good option, why then haven't I seen more of them being used??

cause lots of places will try to sell people bigger springs rather than the poly air. Al had poly airs in his terrano and loved them,
Ya leaf springs will handle load better than coils will.
Yea got out in the end pete, found someone to giz a tug backwards and it was all good. It was just one of those situations where the weight of a 60 and trying to pull up hill don't work. lol.
No pics sorry, the owner of the camera didn't want tt get it wet.

dunno about those ones, but mine were plenty strong enough.......................
