Simex / Silverstone / Other

Post by northland_pajero »

My Pajero is my daily drive aswell as my toy
I run two sets of rims, 15x7 alloys for road use and 15x7 steel spokies for off road.

For off road on a Pajero what do people reccomend silverstone or simex or another band?

I use to own a FJ40, but in the sillyness of youth sold it and brought a trail bike... now have a 2.8 diesel Pajero, not quite as thirsty as the 2F.

There is a price difference simex / silverstone I assume there is also a performance difference

from the brief research I did when I was looking at either, Simexs sizes are generally bigger - 31s measure close too 32" and the silverstones were a shade under 31". Silverstones had less knobs so bigger voids better for mud you could argue. Didnt comfirm, but silverstones may have been a softer compound, ie wear quicker.

What tyres you get just comes down to personal preference, what sort of 4x4 driving your doing and what sort of terain your on.

I've got some rapidly wearing simexs ( :? ) on my truck and they arent the be all and end all for the offroad driving we're doing around wgtn. They are F#@King awesome in deep boggy soil when your burried up to the door handles where they can work properly and dig there way through almost anything but when it comes to harder clay or slippery rock and stuff a lot of the other guys with different tyres seem to have better traction than me :x

talked about this with nick at 4x4 accessories the silvers are 100 buks cheaper and both are top in mud.best all round tyre would have to be mickey thompson baja claw's they are amazing in all areas and dont wear as fast but it depends how you drive.they have the biggest side bitters ive seen on a tyre and self clean well :D they throw big stones tho

I run the Mickeys (Bias Ply Baja Claw) and they are an awsome tyre. In hard slippery clay and rocks i think they are ahead of simexs.

They will wear fast on the road, maybe not as fast as a mudzilla but definatly quicker than something like a mtr. If you get the radial claw you will gey pretty good ks out of them.

Take a look at the new Treapdpor Radial, we ran them this season on our trials truck and were very happy with how they preformed. Cant comment on how fast they wear out though.

Where do you get the Mickey Thompsons from? The Baja Claw certainly looks the part & has rave reviews in the US, but who stocks them here?

I bought mine from Fully Equiped $430ish each 37x13.5x15, not sure if they stock them anymore. When i bought my set they said they were not bringing any more into the country not sure if that meant none at all or just in 37"

the less surface area the tyre has the quicker itl wear and those hardcore tyres have a softer compound so faster wearing again. The mickey t's lasted ages on the zook coz its so light.i just found them incredible for backing out.could easily sink the tire into soft riverbed and get the tyre spinning then back out (idleing) without wheelspin ,they just claw out.im saving for some for my cruiser now, wouldnt buy any other tyre after driving them

What are the Mickey Ts (or the varients of them like mudzilla's) like on sidlings, grass, clay, etc. They dont look to have much lateral (sideways) grip?

Ive never had a problem with the Mickeys on sidlings in any conditions. Let the pressures down and you have the sidebiter keeping you on track.

Speaking of Baja claws wearing, check this out. I've bent a tie rod on each of my last four trips and had to drive it on the highway for some distance with a rudely straightened tie rod and the toe in way to hell. Even after the drive from Katikati to Te Aroha there was no feathering or unusual wear pattern. Nor has there been any other time even with the toe out by up to 10mm. I think these tyres might last for ever on the road and the Jeep's 2 tonne even without the fat guy in it. I run 40psi on road though. Soft compunds would have ripped the rubber right off. cheers

I measured both and the silverstone was only 4mm smaller then the simex, that was for 35" though. I have just bought the silverstones and so far am very happy with them, apart from ugly road manners: it just takes a different driving style. I am off to Reefton next weekend so will give them a good thrashing over there for my final verdict.

The measurement I quoted before was from their website. Actually measured the sliverstone is just over 34". So far I like them you can feel the torque of the motor biting into the dirt. Need to experiment with pressures though to find what works on what. You can really get your arse sliding on off camber hard wet clay. Wet rocks are another thing too, but I think these can be overcome wth lower tyre pressures. Should get a good workout in differing terran this weekend down around Haast. Will let you know.

I own 35x11.5 extreme treakers and have compared the two tyres.
The 35 silverstone measures about 865mm across and the simex 895mm so there is a huge size difference. On the hilux I have nearly 300 under the diff and that is what really counts.
The rubber compound is alot better in the silverstones and they wear better on the road. The silverstones have less lugs which makes them more open in the shit.
Regardless of which one you have ,they will not do any good unless they are under 10lbs pressure.

So the down side of both is you have to have a compressor to blow the tyres up for the road.

Last weekend I mounted all the sizes of MT-117 Xtreme and measured inflated sizes using tape measure and mark 1 eye ball. The current measurements on http://www.4wdbits.co.nz/ProductsList.aspx?CategoryID=16&selection=4 are pretty close. There is a difference in size between the 35s as well and although the measurements suggest they are an inch smaller than some Simex 35s, when they're side by side the difference isn't that large. Maybe I need to go through the same exercise with the Simex.

For the clay that we regulary drive on up here the Silverstone is a better tyre. For general use the Simex is better but it looses out on the hard wet clay. I've used both Silverstone and Simex and I currently have 35x11.5 Simex but that is because it is a better all round tyre and is quite abit bigger than the Silverstone

The 35x10.5 Silverstone is basically the same size as a 35x10.5 Simex. I use to use the Silverstones and had a Simex as a spare. The 35x11.5 Simex is a completely different tyre and size. It is an Extreme Trekker 2 so isn't even the same model tyre as the 35x10.5. If you look at the specs, you can see why 90% of winch comp trucks are using 35x11.5. They are 35.5" tall as opposed to 34.8(?) for the 35x10.5.

I drive ashitty toyota corolla to work veryday so they are wearing real good  Got a good feel for them in haast, low pressures are the go. They are real loud on the tarseal and take shit loads of weights to balance. So far happy with them. Good test coming up with Ikamatua trip, all types of terrain to drive on. Going to run realy low pressures.

ok thats good to hear, are you running tubes with them?? what sort of lift do you run in your safari??

Just asking all these questions as i will be up for some tyres soon, wanna get some good ones, but if i can get 'good ones' without going broke by buying the Simex range, Silverstones will be the go i think!

I run a 2" LWB TJM liner suspenson lift which gives it close to three in the SWB. It also gives good load
carrying capablities. I also have a 2" body lift. Also have 14mm radius Arm spacers to bring the front axle forward, helps when running chains on 35" tyres. Only have a tube in one secondary to a puncture.
