Heya,
I need inspiration on a roof mount.
Wanting to mount a lappy (and maybe a PRS) on the roof of my vehicle - but not too sure on how i would go about doing it. Ideally it would be screwed to a mount so I could unscrew when going for the WOF.
At a guess id be attaching a metal plate to the roof and then bolting brackets on to the plate and mounting gear off that... but how do I mount the plate to the roof with out drilling holes through my roof? (dont want water coming in though the holes)
Found www.cbrack.com - and looking at something similar to that...
So if u have gear mounted on your roof how did you do it? and can u post me pics of your mounts!
Thanks
Greg

the 4wd action mag (aussie one with dvd) has a whole pile of adverts with roof boxes and other cool stuff, have a look at one if you can, can dig one out and PM you the vendors if you want.
PR might have some idea's, he just built a pile in his GQ

Awesome.
Thanks for links and pointing in right direction.
Think I just might wield a couple of bars on the inside of my roof and then mount some MDF board to it and then mount to MDF board.

I thought about doing that and was advised by a sheet metal worker that the vibration would cause the metal to crack around the welds. He suggested that it would be better to bolt brackets up to the double skinned sections to hold up the MDF though I would suggest that you use ply as MDF tends to fall apart with vibration ( this I have learnt from others on this board who have built rear boxes out of it)
I hope this helps
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

Not quite what you have in mind maybe, but this is what ive done in my rig.

What you don't see is a sheet of 5mm aluminium that runs from the rear light mount to the front light mount under the hood lining. It is also attached to the cross member with a liberal smear of RTV to prevent vibration(s).
I have seen laptops mounted to the hood lining using a similar method. These had a sheet metal shell that the keyboard section slid into allowing the screen to close. The sides of the shell were bent with just a 12mm lip that went over the keyboard part to hold it up there. The sides of this sheet metal were cut out for any slots/plugs etc.
For removal the laptop was opened and slid out, then screws that hold the sheet metal in place removed to disassemble the whole thing.
Mine as can be seen just has 2 bolts each side, loosen these and I slide the PC out, remove them to remove the two pressed steel supports. Only a couple of cables (heaps in my case) left dangling.
Hopefully I wont have to do this next time I go for a WOF.

Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Nice - hadnt thought about making a sliding mount for the lappy - but thats a really good idea.. would make it easy as to remove.
