Man this Mig welding is fun!! it's taking some getting used to. But it's good having a play on some test sheets of steel. Last time I was welding was Ark welding. Years ago.
Having a plasma cutting sure beats using an angle grinder.

Had a freaky thing happen to me truck this week.
I pulled away from a mates place, taking it easy when BANG! I lost forward drive. I thought. Oh no, not another busted diff. So I engaged the front wheels and went round to Ricks. Walking up to him I said, "I think I've broke the rear diff". He replied,"no you haven't, look! Your right rear axle is hangin out man!" (it's a wonder I didn't trip over it when I walked away from the truck)
When I took the photo the axle was actually hangin out further than pictured.
Half an hour later it was fixed.

It's a wonder I didn't take out any on coming traffic on the way to Ricks.

I know who but I won't say. With the extra horse power going through the drive train I should be checking things more often.. Oh well. No major damage done. Freaked me out tho!

I was checking the progress of my Holden out at the shop today and spied a nice new Harrod supercharger being fitted on a Clubsport. It's the new designed one. The price of them have fallen a fair bit lately. They're pretty cheap.
After I get new rings/pistons n valve springs done this year on the 40. A supercharger is the next mod. 8)
I'll start saving now.

Why do you need new rings and pistons?

Gool 'ol LS1 piston slap?

That's the one!! The LS1 I sold to my brother outta my Holden for his jet boat is getting new rings/pistons n springs for the same reason. That motor had done 170,000k. Cost is around 3k.

Nice supercharger setup!

That's cool how the drive is at the back and bought back under the charger.

That's what i thought Matt. Only down side with a valley mounted kit is heat. Even with an intercooled charger. It still gets that hot that you can't even touch it.
These Vortech superchargers are the shit! They don't heat up and still keep producing power at 7000RMP. 8)
But the cost is right up there. :?

Your vehicle seems to go ok, so what are the symptoyms of the piston slap in your case? Is it just a bit rattly? Consuming more oil than you'd like?

To me it sounds like tappits. When it's cold it's a little noisy. Yes it's using just a tad more oil than I'd like. It's not to bad. You can't see any smoke at all, not even at startup.
In the next couple of months I'll get it done. If I'm going to put a supercharger on it at some stage it's a good idea to get rid of the piston slap 1st.

that vorteck is an interesting looking thing, I was thinking of trying to put a drive gear on an old turbo and see if it would work like a charger obviously would to some degree.

certainly looks like a big turbo with a drive gear, im interested in the cooler.. maybe water cooled?? can't see any water lines but i can't see it getting any air flow either..
interesting.

The Harrod Supercharger is water cooled coz it gets hot mounted in the valley.
The Vortech Supercharger isn't water cooled as it doesn't get hot. Though the air intake is intercooled lowering the temp 3 or 4 degrees.

I can probably source one of the bus turbos.

Pete, it was the cooler i was talking about i understand what it does im just interested in how it does it. Usually for example you have air/air (eg front mount) intercoolers or water/air (eg old legacy top mount) Im just interested if the cooler in your pic is as simple as a water/air or if its some fancy new technology.

if all else fails use Google!
http://www.vortechsuperchargers.com/product.php?p=19&cat_key=3
it is a water/air system which still uses an external radiator to cool the water but also has an additional reservoir where ice/cold water can be added. Pretty cool setup.

That's the Vortech setup. I think the Harrod chargers are different again.

yea sorry that was what i was rambling on about nothing to special or new about the top mounted standard supercharger like your top pic. It was the vortech system i was interested to no about, as pagar said it appears to be a turbo (compressor side only) and instead of the exhaust side and housing it just has a big gear drive on it. And that power cooler looked interesting. Good luck with the project as you have found they are never ending.

A guy called Craig works there. His offroad machine is amazing. You might remember it. It came second in the Sheffield Mud Plug last year.

dont turbos spin at a huge rpm when on boost? ie your motor would never produce enough rpm for it to make a difference?

yes but if I look up the spool rpm of the turbo it is only a case of gearing the drive so it is spooled at just above idle, I could run a preasure relef valve to keep boost constant to for that mater. mm lots more to play with, may have to ask the wife to buy me a milling machine for xmas....
