fj40 transfer case question

Post by nzdncjw »

hey there, i have a 1980 fj40, I recently converted it from vacuum operated 4wd to manual 4wd engaging.... worked a treat but just when I was fiting the lever to the wee shaft out the top of the transfer case or high low the wee shaft sliped into the box :x I have tried magnet, tried everything I could think of bar pulling the box apart!

I have had no luck.... so I need to open up the transfer case... :? If I unbolt the rear of the transfer case, will I have a pile of parts fall out? Or will i b able to unbolt the rear of the case pull it off, poke the wee shaft back up an put it all back together and fit the high low lever back ont and go play!

Thanks!!!

If its the split box, you can pull off the pto cover plate (or pto if fitted) get a torch and look in. the shifter will most likely be sitting resting out the output shaft. a long screw driver or bar should reach it and you can just push it back up.

This has fixed mine in the past and one other i know of .

Good luck

At least I don't feel so bad now knowing I'm not the only one to have one this!!!!! I have tried that... no luck! I just can't seem to push it up from that side... Thinking I may have to pull it apart.... hate to! I might try one more time tho....

Thanks!!

Well I thought today, I shall fix this transfer case once and for all... failing that a hole will be dug! I figured ONE last try via the PTO cover, and what do you know.... it worked! after spending plenty of time the other day trying with no success and what would seem never work... it happened!

All good, just gotta put all the bits and pieces back on and go play now...

YAH!!!

Thanks for all the help!
