stopped in at ricks the other day while getting a clutch kit for the LR. got to talking to smokey and then began the realisation that the LR was not going to make the trip  But the surf is now going thanks to ctr4x4  Smokey showed me Ricks new bar on his jeep shipped in from America, very flash! thought I could do with something like that on mine so yesterday cut some more of my trampoline up and turned one trampoline leg into a smaller version  A little cheaper and with the spotties on it looks the part. The surf is definitely going to be the flashest truck on this trip, especially with my trampoline back bar, sliders and front bar

Roll on friday!

You good to go into the chasm on friday should we need to mike, Bill, Smokey,Jase? I am going to call the lady at Ikamatua to warn her that a group of us may well turn up on thursady night. Spoke with all the crew now and only one vehicle won't make the chasm should we go friday. So if we go friday most of us, if not all will be starting from Ikamatua on thursday night. Jase you happy to stay at Iki should we go friday, spoke with Rik so assume you doing what he said?

I reckon we should wait till Wednesday to finalise, like Richard says the weather is based at Hokitika, the Hoki gorge gets 9.5 metres of rain a year, the weather can all together miss the Ikas area, would be best to ring Ikas hotal on Wednesday, talk to Donna and ask about the local weather, might save every one a lot of hassles getting there in a hurry.
Trust me, I know what I am doing

You are right Paul, I will call them today anyways. Just looked at the 7 day rain forecast, the 7 day forecast for both Hoki and buller and I reckon we will be fine to go with our original plan. Keep an eye on the forum wednesday evening, I will make the call by 1800hrs.

Hi Al and All

The way the weather map has now changed, it tends to favour the Saturday for the chasm track. But is still probably 50-50

The Grey at the moment is very fordable at around 1900mm but the rain on the Thursday could change that and if it comes up will probably be unfordable all weekend , as it usually takes two day's to drop.

The main river we have to worry about is the Clarke. As long as we can ford that we can go to the Grey and make a return trip through the Chasm. The Clarke Rises very quickly so if it starts raining moderately while we are in there we haven't got much time to get out.

Looking at the posts it seems most will probably be in Ikamatua by Friday morning. If Fitzy's trip was left to the Sunday that would mean we could make a decision on Friday morning about the chasm because we would see the weather first hand and also have a look at the Grey.

There are lots of other things to do around that area anyway so we wouldnt be wasting a day.

Just my penny's worth

Cheers Richard

I'd presume if we do Smokeys track on the Sunday we'll reverse it and come out at Jacksons??

Couldn't agree more, just had a good look at the three forecasts I am following and I reckon the best time would be a night trip fri- sat.  Seriously that is the best weather window but not realy practical, but then at a latter date.....something to think about. Will ring Iki pub tomorrow morning and also fuel shop to ensure we can fill up whenever and maybe use their facilities for you toymoyas should they need it
Ony three sleeps.... 8)

I think the best option is to go in to the chasm the moment the Clarke is fordable on friday. It wouldn't matter if we had to wait until 12 because we have daylight until nearly 6pm and if anything goes wrong we have until noon the next day to do something about it.
The Clarke river drops quite quick so we could fill in time over at the caves, enough play areas over there

The rain is moving down very quick on the Saturday and in the north is heavy.

The trucks pretty much ready to go, just got to take the roof racks off. Was a pain to move the stuff I usually keep up there. Am running minimalist, so have heaps of space, oh and lots of lollies as the Mrs bought some based on four people in the truck not one 8) :D
